Warner Bros private eye shows and westerns from the late 50s and early 60s typically had great theme music going for them. 77 SUNSET STRIP is classic among them, as are MAVERICK, SUGARFOOT and BRONCO.

I really do love so many of Curtiz' films (although, admittedly, he's had his share of clunkers). As has been pointed out, he worked in many genres and with many great stars. My basic problem with him is that he doesn't (didn't) seem to possess a personal style, like Lang or Hitchcock or Tourneur, H...

Rod Serling's REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT is probably the most anti-boxing of all boxing films.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Bernard Hermann's thrilling opening theme music for THE TWILIGHT ZONE--one of the most hypnotically compelling pieces of music ever created for television.

Have you seen Borzage's 1933 film MAN'S CASTLE? A poignant and provocative romance with Spencer Tracy and Loretta Young. Borzage was quite effective blending tough and tender; this one's truly a gem!

I simply couldn't bring myself to watch such a thoroughly unattractive group of people all together at one time.

Another fine noirish western would be DEVIL'S DOORWAY (1950) starring Robert Taylor, also directed by Anthony Mann and beautifully photographed in black & white by John Alton. It's an MGM picture and TCM runs it fairly regularly. Highly recommended!

John - With respect to M-SQUAD and JOHNNY STACCATO: episodes of both shows are readily available on eBay, both on VHS and DVD. Quality is apt to be variable but worth the risk, especially in the case of JOHNNY STACCATO. An absolutely astonishing program! I own all twenty seven episodes and have watc...

Perhaps this is a little bit off most everyone's radar, but in the late 50s there was a terrific western TV series called YANCY DERRINGER starring Jock Mahoney. In it, he had an Indian friend named Pahoo who would constantly be watching his back. He was played by an actor named X. Brands. Pahoo neve...

Being a big fan of TV private eye shows I would have to lodge a vote for Henry Mancini's brilliant score for PETER GUNN. Mancini also did the music for another show from that period, MR. LUCKY, which was also pretty terrific (the music, not the show). My other favorite is Elmer Bernstein's electrify...

There were a bunch that really shocked me when I first saw them, most notably THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (57) and THE HORROR OF DRACULA (58). Seeing them as a kid in a movie theater was delightfully traumatic and fairly unforgettable. Others that I really enjoyed were CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF (61) with ...
