Omigosh, aren't the Duncan sisters wonderful? As much as I love Anita Page, the Duncans should have starred in Broadway Melody.

I've actually never seen it--the combination of icy Joan Fontaine and hammy Orson Welles has always steered me away.

"The Middleman" (new TV series)

Has anyone watched this? The NY Times gave it a terrific review, so I gave the first two episodes a try last night. It's a cute X-Files parody, trying to be Pushing Daisies/Moonlighting/Ghostbusters . . . Two secret agents overthrowing comic-book villains. The script isn't bad, but I simply cannot g...

They never show it anymore! TCM showed High Stakes once, well over ten years ago, and never since. They did the same with It's a Great Life and Three-Cornered Moon, two other terrific moves I'd love to see again.

Great cinematography, and great script, but it's not even in my personal top ten.

Any film where Orson Welles tries to "act" automatically falls off the "great" list in my book. He and his "they're always after me Lucky Charms" accent killed Lady from Shanghai!

Re the pale orange bouffant hairdos: I am embarrassed to admit it, but in the late 60's, I sported one of those... my hairdresser at the time loved the "champagne" blonde look, and to be honest, around here anyway, it was all the rage. Oh, the things we do when we are young and stupid! :o...

"I've had it up to here with your bring-downs!"

Gosh , that was hilarious: the bad writing, the bad acting, the wonderful pale-orange bouffant wiglets! I want me a pale-orange bouffant wiglet now. At least a foot and a half high. The only thing that could have improved it would have been casting Ethel Merman rather than Edie Adams as Ernest Borg...

I thought Mae was terrific in High Stakes- -I don't want to give anything away, but for most of the movie you think, " what the hell is she doing?" And then in the last reel, something happens that makes you go--" oh! Wow! Damn good performance!" Mae was one of those actresses wh...

Max Linder on TCM (late April 13)

I have such a crush on Max. He's nothing like Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd; you have to see him to appreciate him. They are showing Troubles of a Grass Widower (1912), Max Takes a Picture (1913) and Seven Years bad Luck (1921) tonight.

I wish they would show his daughter's documentary on him!

"Burke's Law" finally on DVD

It's not a movie, but this early '60s detective show had some amazing guest stars. I remember my parents wouldn't let me watch it (on too late). Finally, the first season (1963-64) is being released, at the end of April. The guests on the first season alone include Suzy Parker, ZaSu Pitts, Ann Hardi...

I've actually only seen the Renate Muller and Julie Andrews versions. Loved Renate, and the whole film had that wonderful Lubitsch-type air to it, with the dialogue and songs melting into each other. I'd love to see the Jessie Matthews version, but it never shows up on US television!

Re: woman plays man

Wasn't sure where to post this, I'll put it in General;. Saw movie recently in which Jessie Matthews played a woman disguised as a man ( First a Girl ). Put me in mind of other films, same theme. ...... mel That's the 1935 remake of the fabulous 1933 Viktor und Viktoria , starring the equally fabul...

Friend Eve, Could you please talk a bit about what future projects (film or print) where we might look for your work? If you are able to write about Georgiana Drew Barrymore (Ethel, Lionel & John's mother), would you be able to find a greater amount of documentation of her life about her becaus...
