Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Kevin, have you ever seen Ridgely in anything else? Apparently she had a few bit parts in the 30s and 40s. But other silents?

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Kevin, I think The Golden Chance was the film DeMille made simultaneously with The Cheat.

Cleo Ridgely was a last-minute replacement for an actress named Edna Goodrich. DeMille fired Goodrich for being drunk on the set and for not photographing well.....

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I watched DeMille's early feature The Golden Chance which boasted great productions values, sets, etc. as well as solid performances from Wallace Reid and Cleo Ridgely (who I've never seen before). The story was a tad far-fetched with a society matron hiring poor Cleo (bad marriage but the daughter ...

This was the film Wallace Reid was injured while making... a train accident in Oregon. This started him of his morphine and possibly other drugs addictions.

Re: More Lost Silent Films Discovered In Russia!

Jeff... that's the list I added actor names to...

Yes it's not just that they have these films but the films have name actors like Wallace Reid, Ramon Novarro, Betty Compson, Thomas Meighan, Jackie Coogan, Alice Terry, Wallace Beery, May McAvoy, Renee Adoree, Harry Carey, and Richard Dix.

Re: The Last Flight (1931)

Here's my review on IMDb: WOW.... this film is excellent. The best "lost generation" film I've seen... perfectly captures the Hemingway/Fitzgerald feeling of hopelessness after WW I. It also boasts several terrific performances. Richard Barthelmess stars with the fragile Helen Chandler, Jo...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I also think Gloria Swanson was terrific in Fine Manners and also Stage Struck . There are inferior copies of these films floating around (I have them) which is sad since Eastman House has pristine copies of these fine comedies which prove that Swanson was a delightful comedienne as well as a great ...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Elaine Hammerstein had a sizable film career in silents. In Paint and Powder (1925) she plays Mary Nolan, a "lily of the alley," a struggling singer/dancer at Dago Mike's dive. Her boyfriend Jimmy (Theodore von Eltz) waits tables. When a big Broadway producer (John St. Polis) comes in one ...

Chaney without makeup? Try Tell It to the Marines, a terrific film that stars Chaney with William Haines, Eleanor Boardman, and Carmel Myers.

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

The state censorship boards were idiotic.... if the final reel of The Enemy were found, this would probably rank as a major silent film. I agree, Dempster was a cypher in Sherlock Holmes . She plays the floozie in The White Rose but I don't remember much about her in that one. And I also liked her i...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Also recently watched Griffith's One Exciting Night with Carol Dempster as the frail heiress involved in "old dark house" murder mystery involving imposters, a stranger, and of course a family fortune. Henry Hull and Charles Emmett Mack co-starred. The film was too long but had some nice s...
