Re: Name Five Films Worthy of Rediscovery
"Absolute Beginners--at the time this 1986 musical was best known for being incredibly unsuccessful. Later the title song would be known as David Bowie's last top five hit in the UK. But I find this musical adaptation of the late fifties novel strikingly shot and refreshingly innovative."-...

Re: Noir Alley
O'Brien was always convincing playing cops. He was great in everything I've seen him in. DOA remains my favorite O'Brien movie. Hanging the child out of the window was over the edge, literally. You'll never see that in a contemporary film.

Richard Conte worked on a TV show called The Four Just Men. The rest of the cast was equally great. Someone posted several episodes on YouTube

The Count Dracula Society. I remember reading about it. Dr. Donald Reed was the president, if I recall correctly. And Forry Ackerman was a member.

Re: Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972)
AD and Satanic are two Hammer Draculas I have no interest in rewatching. In AD, he never leaves the dilapidated church and enters the modern world. Most of the run time is Alucard and his Mod girlfriends. The opening fight is the only interesting moment. The Yorga films handled the concept of a Euro...

Re: ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’....
It was a toss-up (regarding actually going to a movie theatre) between The Pope's Exorcist and Renfield this past weekend. I chose Renfield , which I consider 100% Grade A, U.S. Prime garbage. Concerning House of Exorcism , it was a ruinous bastardization of Lisa and the Devil , a surreal phantasma...

Re: The Hunchback of the Morgue (aka El jorobado de la morgue) (1973)
I'd rank Horror Rises From The Tomb at #1. It has a better story, an atmospheric location and better music, Naschy plays two roles and he and Helga Line are extremely nasty villains. Christina Suriani walks around in a diaphanous nightgown in Gothic tradition and Emma Cohen is the ingenue heroine. N...

Re: ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’....
After The Exorcist, the Italian movie industry vomited about a dozen knockoffs, Ossessa, House of Exorcism (with Telly Savalas and Robert Alda), Beyond The Door, etc. Most of them followed the same routine as the original. This Pope film is no different, it just has better production quality. A new ...

Re: I Married a Monster from Outer Space (1958)
I Married A Monster From Outer Space--not to be confused with the Diana Dors/George Gobel movie I Married A Woman--looks like an extended episode of the original Outer Limits TV series with its terrific crisp, noir cinematography and creature design. The Colossus of New York also had that look.

The Pharoah's Curse with the always welcomed Ziva Rodan was also a Bel Air film. It's an okay time-spinner with a prune-faced combination mummy/vampire.

Re: Frankenstein 1970 (1958)
This is a longtime favorite since I was a kid. When Boris is not around, the movie lags. The perfect time to get the popcorn. Karloff's expressions of contempt, annoyance and lechery are priceless. The terrific, fakeout opening sets the bar too high for the rest of the film.

Re: Vertigo remake
I can't see Downey in the Jimmy Stewart role although obviously Downey can. He does flippant well but the story is not geared for a fast talking, flippant, "everything rolls off my back" lead.
The combination of Hitchcock, Hermann and Burks is too potent.

Konga with the man you love to see rage, Michael Gough, is on Sven March 17. This movie is a good fit for his show.
