Re: Took a lot to get here, but registered at last...so hello!

Lomm ... Yes, I'd prefer using my jimimac71 name. This forum is different and it may take time for me to adjust. The reply feature looks odd. I do have to ask why the requirement is so small for the avatar. Less than 48K I believe. LawrenceA ... Thanks. You are a good person and I remember you from...

Re: Noir Alley

Wow! It appears to me that THUNDER ROAD has generated more comments than any other film shown on Noir Alley in quite awhile. I'm glad to see you're all alive and well. Also, I've enjoyed reading your comments. I worried that the demise of TCM Message Boards would put an end to these conversations. ...

Re: NOIR or NOT?

So while Johnny Guitar is a technicolor Western, I don't label it as such because it is such an oddball film in so many ways. E.g. what other western are the two leading antagonist woman? https://th.bing.com/th/id/OIP.va7JeedrmmzzHB3ulqOzZgHaFy?pid=ImgDet&rs=1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt...

Re: Fallen Angel

Fallen Angel is a good film. I like the casting of Alice Faye as the "good girl". This would be her last film for 20th Century Fox, and she didn't make another film until 17 years later; the remake of State Fair in 1962 (and isn't it odd that the 1945 State Fair cast Dana Andrews). The sup...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I enjoy most of Fairbanks Jr. 30s work. He brought a lot of energy and charm to his characters, which one finds in The Life of Jimmy Dolan. This is a classic pre-code type character; A person that has committed crimes and lives on the dark side, but with a heart (well at least for Young and children...

Re: Foreign film poll

I chose "other" because I love British films and to a lesser extent Australian films. I'm sure some of it has to do with no subtitles, but also the culture. If I had to pick from your list I'd be like everyone else and say French films. The last one I saw & liked was AMALIE '02. I ass...

Re: Host Intros/Outros

Has anyone else noticed that as of late 95% of their content is pulled directly from the "Articles & Reviews" section of TCM's site? Man, the days of Robert Osborne (or even Tiffany Vasquez) really are long gone... To me many people are expecting too much from a network that doesn't h...

Re: Foreign film poll

I chose 1) Japan, 2) Italy, and 3) Germany. I had a hard time choosing my number 3, as I love many of the films from all of the other listed countries. I settled on Germany mainly for their silent era movies. If I had to add an additional unlisted nation, I'd say South Korea, especially from the pa...

Re: I Just Watched...

We watched the first three Torchy Blane movies and thought they were fun. The Adventurous Blonde has a particularly neat mystery plot. Glenda Farrell deserves a more appealing leading man than Barton MacLane, however. He's like the B-Movie Pat O'Brien, who has never seemed like a leading man, eithe...

Re: OBITUARIES

[ JJG has a thing about rock guitarists. It stems from his jazz centrism, and is perhaps a pushback against the popularity of rock compared to jazz. And I think he was saying that Beck wasn't an influence on many rock guitarists because they mostly suck while Beck was really good. Which is still du...

I agree. Bread, Love and Dreams is a very good film and Gina shines. Of course one has to accept subtitles.

Exactly. You seemed to be making a lengthy statement that the government was overreaching and hurting the mom and pop bootleggers. In addition, they were doing it partially to advance the interests of big corporations. While not recognizing that it was a potentially hazardous product due to lack of...

Re: OBITUARIES

As a guitar player I question how influential Jeff Beck was, especially to rock guitarist. Beck was very influential to jazz\rock (fusion), guitarists but Beck was much more skilled than most rock guitarist and thus what Beck was doing was over the head of the average rock guitarist. (too be influe...

If other alcoholic beverage producers had to pay taxes, then everyone producing should. Not sure where you get gov...
