Re: Marion Davies on TCM

The salute starts tonight (after years of nagging the programming VP).... When Knighthood Was in Flower , which Ben Model Kickstarted, is a magnificent historical drama, and my Little Old New York project is a fun romp with a dramatic twist. Two of the biggest hits of the silent era. Thanks for the...

Re: Which Comedian is like Fingers on a Chalkboard for you?

This might be tmi territory but growing up one of my relatives was a lower functioning handicapped person my father would pay me to watch essentially and we had to sit there and watch silent slapstick and kids shows from their childhood like Peanuts. There are lots of things I don’t care for such a...

Re: Noir Alley

I've seen Thunder Road a few times. A good movie but it's a six-lane stretch to call it a noir. As Eddie Muller has said before, he sometimes selects movies that stretch the noir definition and may not even be noir. That is why it is informative to listen to his intros and outros. Having seen Thund...

Re: Good And Bad Final Films Of Big Stars

Jean Arthur - Shane is one of the top westerns and it is interesting that a western was her final film.

William Powell - Mister Roberts. Powell goes out on top as a supporting player, as a doctor in a war time comedy.

Re: I Just Watched...

Did anyone else see Night Watch last night, the thriller with Elizabeth Taylor, Laurence Harvey, and Billie Whitelaw? As in most of her post- Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf films, Taylor is loud and annoying, though this is understandable in the context of the film. Harvey, as usual, is pretty good...

Re: I Just Watched...

I'm watching The Silver Horde, a pre-code with Evelyn Brent, Joel McCrea and Jean Arthur. While there are talented actors in this film it is only OK due to slack direction.

Re: Comparing Awards Associations

It appears Skimpole is only comparing the best picture award. Does the National Board of Review provide nominations for best-picture?

I ask became if they did, it would be interesting to compare what films were nominated, as well as which film won.

Re: Noir Alley

Hunt the Man Down (1950 RKO) might be a premier for Eddie\Noir Alley. The film features Cleo Moore in a minor role before she signed with Columbia for many low budget crime\noir films.

Don't Bother to Knock (1952 - 20th Century Fox) is my favorite Monroe film; her screen persona is put to very good use by director Roy Baker. WIdmark is good, while Bancroft doesn't have much to do but looks great doing it. Also features iconic noir actor Elisha Cook Jr.

If TCM wishes to honor a Latino woman why not Katy Jurado. Jurado was in many more high qualify films than Moreno and had a lot more interesting roles; Bullfighter and the Lady, High Noon, Arrowhead, Broken Lance, The Racers, Trial, Trapeze, The Badlanders, One Eyed Jacks, Barabbas, Once Upon A Sca...

Re: Noir Alley

This week-ends feature is Mr. Soft Touch with Glenn Ford, Evelyn Keyes and John Ireland. Sounds familiar, but not sure if I have seen it or not. Mr. Soft Touch setting is Christmas time. A very light hearted noir with good chemistry between Ford and Keyes. Ireland is somewhat wasted as a news repor...
