Re: I Just Watched...

I watched Rear Window last night for the umpteenth time, but this time I caught something I never had before. When Lisa (Grace Kelly) announces to Jeff (Jimmy Stewart) that she plans to stay the night, she reveals a little overnight case that is almost as magical as Mary Poppins' carpet bag. For som...

Re: May 2023 Schedule Posted, William Powell is SOTM

Well EP ... Are you watching TCM movies on Criterion? There's some overlap (they have a "Hollywood Classics" thread that usually has dozens of titles at any given time), but the Criterion Collection channel has a lot more foreign and art house titles that TCM would never show. There's als...

Re: May 2023 Schedule Posted, William Powell is SOTM

Deaf Smith was a real person and there's a county in Texas named for him. He pronounced "deaf" as "deef", and it was pronounced this way in the film Giant, too, but most people nowadays pronounce it in the customary manner.

Re: April 2023 Schedule Posted, WB 100th Anniversary

Rather than having a WB tribute, one idea for a month long tribute would be to look at last year's Sight and Sound poll winners. There are some movies TCM should show even if it would take a whole evening to show ( Shoah, Satantango, West of the Tracks ). There are movies that TCM hasn't shown for ...

Re: Classical Music

I can't seem to find the 'original' Switch-On Bach, released in the 60s. The opening number was Partita Nol. 3 and I wanted to post it here. If I recall, the pieces were not frilly, they were straightforward honoring the source material, not like today where synthesizer practitioners seem to want t...

Per MovieCollectorOH's list, Beyond the Forest has been shown on TCM exactly one time, in November 1994.

Re: Classical Music

I have an old Bolero recording that has the original orchestral version (Bernsteinn /Orchestra National de France) on one side and a Moog Synthesizer version (Andrew Kazdin and Thomas Shepherd) on the other. A 1980 recording. Don't know that I ever listened to side 2. CBS must have thought that wou...

Re: Child Actors Who Won Oscars as Adults

Depends on how you define child and child actor. Numerous stars got their first roles as teenagers. But here are a few others:

Helen Hunt
Jeff Bridges
Natalie Portman
Leonardo DiCaprio
Regina King (got her start on the sitcom 227)
Laura Dern
Joaquin Phoenix

Re: TCM announces it is sunsetting the TCM Forums

. . . In London, it's common for people to buy ice cream at intermission. They even sell them in the aisles so you don't have to visit the bar. "Getta your ice cream! Getta your tootsie-frootsie ice cream!" . . . recently heard at a weekend matinée of The Ice Cream Man Cometh by Eugene O'...

Re: Cabaret

In the below clip from The Dick Cavett Show that aired the month that Cabaret was released, Liza Minnelli sings "Maybe This Time" to rousing applause from the studio audience. She tells Dick Cavett that the song was written for her by John Kander and Fred Ebb. However, according to Kaye B...

Re: April 2023 Schedule Posted, WB 100th Anniversary

Warner Brothers was and still is a major studio, I'm surprised they didn't include a Batman or two from the 90's for the schedule. And I guess Angels with Dirty Faces is still untainable. I love that they included Warner Brothers musicals - they had franchise films before it was called 'franchise' ...

Re: Really? You've NEVER seen that Classic Film?

Yes, the parakeets in BARBARELLA were cute. (I am a bird lover and have 2 green-cheeked conures --- or actually they have me.) What was scary about those parakeets was how those cute birds attacked and drew blood from Barbarella, And, yes those kids were super creepy! I have one green-cheek conure ...
