Re: Lawrence of Arabia -- Epic historical drama

Mr. O'Toole never won a best actor Oscar. Hard to believe. Nor will we ever see movies made like this again. G.C. It's not hard I'm afraid. O'Toole certainly deserved to win, but it's not surprising that Gregory Peck won that year for To Kill a Mockingbird , his performance is still admired (more s...

Re: Least and Most Favorite Movie of the week

Last week I saw seven movies. History, or how not to show it, turns out to be a major theme. The United States v. Billie Holiday comes from Lee Daniels, whose most famous movie, Precious , answers the question "What if the Dardenne Brothers were soulless hacks?" This movie, which got an ac...

Awards for 2022 movies

The TCM board had a thread for movie awards. One problem was that they didn't distinguish quite which year they were talking about it, so the thread for 2021 movies kept going for the 2022 movies. So ideally all awards news in this thread should be for this year's movies.

Re: Sight and Sound 2022 Goes Pretentious

Jeanne Dielman was not chosen for “pretentious” reasons or for obscurity but merely for its feminist theme. It fits perfectly into the current zeitgeist the same way Citizen Kane did during the initial baby boom era where the “self-made man” theme was the cornerstone of the times. Jeanne Dielman is...

Re: Sight and Sound 2022 Goes Pretentious

One aspect behind the list was a clear desire to get newer films. Remember that 2001 was the youngest film in the 2012 top ten. So now there are four younger there. And well into this century I was seeing greatest movies of all time lists where Blade Runner and Fanny and Alexander were the highest r...

Least and Most Favorite Movie of the week

I'm reviving a long-time TCM forum thread, the least and most favorite movie of the week. This week I saw five movies. Blonde was certainly the worst. Some critics have found nuance in Ana de Armas's performance as Marilyn Monroe, but the movie consists of such unrelenting victimization and of Monro...

Re: Sight and Sound 2022 Goes Pretentious

As People have noticed Portrait of a Lady on Fire was the highest ranking movie since the last poll (as well as the highest ranking movie since 2009) at #30. Looking at theyshootpictures.com top movies of this century (https://theyshootpictures.com/21stcentury_allfilms_table.php), we see it wasn't u...

Re: Sight and Sound 2022 Goes Pretentious

It's tempting to think that many critics thought it might be a good idea to include a female-directed movie on their list, and since most movies are directed by men, the handful of female directed movies did relatively well. (On theyshootpictures.com top 1000 movies list, there are 28 movies directe...
