Re: TCM Pays Tribute to Aldo Ray on His Birthday

The Marrying Kind is a very tense movie, in that, because it's Aldo Ray, one keeps waiting for him to go berzerk. And it keeps not happening... I was especially jazzed about "Bank of England" as I've only seen it once before, and it was mostly on in the background. So there was a lot of &q...

TCM Pays Tribute to Aldo Ray on His Birthday

By playing "The Day They Robbed the Bank of England" with audio and video completely out of sync...

Happy Birthday, Aldo! This one's for you.

Re: WHEN DID THEY DROP THE OUTROS???

Ben announced that they were showing the original theatrical version of The French Connection , and it was shown uncut. Whoops I only saw the last ten minutes and assumed it was the 'nu' censored version as 1) it was really blue 2) that's what they've run the last three times they played it (even d...

Re: WHEN DID THEY DROP THE OUTROS???

Outros are back, but they must hive fired the fact checker. They fired that fact checker A LONG time ago... (if you don't remember, Tiffany Vazquez was especially egregious. If the old board is archived, there was a ongoing thread dedicated to her gaffes, that was lengthy ) Anyway, the Friedkin tri...

Re: I Just Watched...

FINALLY, crossed Phaedra off my 'Dassin Completist' list. Due to it's unavailability, I always imagined something smaller and scrappier along the lines of "The Law". I was very, very mistaken. Anyway, WILD movie. Euro-ennui meets Greek tragedy (with a couple dashes of Billy Wilder)?

Re: YOU'RE A BIG BOY NOW (1966)

Elizabeth Hartman's life ended so tragically. She struggled with depression for much of her life. Probably should have reconsidered settling down in Pittsburgh... (apologies to anyone from there. It's just that my friend stated it was hands-down the most depressing place she ever spent any amount o...

Re: YOU'RE A BIG BOY NOW (1966)

Sorta related: A couple years ago a friend was doing the 'special guest instructor' thing at a school in Pittsburgh. The school put her up in one of those mid-century apartment buildings that she dubbed the 'Doris Day Apartment' because it seemed like a place they would have Doris Day residing in on...

Re: I'm Very Thankful That It's a Week and a Half Into the WB100 Month...

It's not Ben Hur... It's a home movie... At least the letterbox thing actually explains something, even though they continued to play it LONG after the concept of letterboxing needed to be explained to anyone. One the other hand, Eddie Von Muller explains the plots of All Through the Night, Black Le...

Re: I'm Very Thankful That It's a Week and a Half Into the WB100 Month...

Twice today already... AND it's like 20 minutes long! I'm convinced Eddie Regular Muller's contract was up and was playing a little hardball with the renewal. TCM said "Oh yeah? We don't need you. We got Eddie VON Muller, and he's MUCH cheaper" EDIT: Okay, they must have started running it...

I'm Very Thankful That It's a Week and a Half Into the WB100 Month...

And thus far, I haven't seen the thing with Eddie VON Muller (I think that was his name, the waxed mustache man) explaining the career of Humphrey Bogart with inserts of paper dolls, and extended explications of the plot machinations of "All Through the Night"--as if this milestone of post...

Re: 'TCM Underground' is DOA

Strange that they single out De Chirico since "weird movie to play when people stumble home from bars" theater has been a TBS, TNT, TCM staple since the late-80s (Man, did they ever love The Manitou...), and only got the "Underground" label in the very early '00s when Rob Zombie ...

Re: Your Favorite Film Critics/Reviewers

My first impression of the Outlaw Film Critic was that he was a soul brother to Joe Bob Briggs. However after reading a smidgen of Vern's reviews, my first impression was wrong. Vern isn't as irreverent or as humorous as is JBB. Yeah, he doesn't lay on the 'character' as hard as Briggs (not that th...

Re: Your Favorite Film Critics/Reviewers

I don't get a newspaper any more, I used to read the reviews in the New York Daily News but they don't print them anymore, That actually reminds me, there was a guy in the Post I used to hate-read religiously. He was this frat-bro doofus who was convinced he was the Oscar Wilde of the kegger. With ...

Re: Your Favorite Film Critics/Reviewers

To be honest, there's more critics I go out of my way to avoid, than ones I actively try to follow... I mean, I enjoy Vern . I like that he makes no distinction between oscar-bait prestige, art movies, or straight to streaming cheap genre films. And that he seems to go out of his way to avoid 'ain't...
