Re: August 2024 Schedule Posted, Summer Under the Stars

I'm hoping that one of the Marlene Dietrich TBA's will be The Monte Carlo Story (1956), a charming late-in-life romance in which she co-starred with Vittoro DeSica as two cultured but increasingly impoverished types trying for a rich marriage as a last-ditch effort to stay afloat. Once they realize ...

Re: AFI's 25 GREATEST MOVIE MUSICALS OF ALL TIME

I know we're stuck with the list, but another one I'd try to find room for is George Cukor's Les Girls (1957), with some spectacular Jack Cole staging of the musical numbers. In the same way as Funny Face it's a great example of what's now called "mid-century modern" style and design. It p...

Re: AFI's 25 GREATEST MOVIE MUSICALS OF ALL TIME

Is there a reason why TCM doesn't show Damn Yankees or L'il Abner ? Li'l Abner is Paramount, so that may be part of it, but TCM has shown it. I remember discussion on the old TCM site about the print they showed; memory fails but it was some kind of work print which hadn't been yet been trimmed to ...

Re: MUSINGS, PONDERINGS, RUMINATIONS AND FANCIES

I missed that. What did he say? Oh, he said that the premise of Peggy Sue was the age old question that if you would go back in time knowing what you knew, would you go back and change your life, and he said no, because he led a perfect life. It had me grinding my teeth. I think that's Ben's idea o...

Never saw MAN'S FAVORITE SPORT but you can't go wrong with Paula and Rock. Hawks called it an homage to screwball comedy and to prove it he borrowed the old trope from Libeled Lady (1936) about the guy who couldn't fish trying to fake it alongside the pros. https://static.wixstatic.com/media/050187...

Re: AFI's 25 GREATEST MOVIE MUSICALS OF ALL TIME

I just looked up Kay Thompson's biography and boy was she TOO TOO! (I didn't realize she also wrote the Eloise at the Plaza book series) What a fabulous, creative, powerhouse personality and career. Boggles my mind actually. Yeah, she was a powerful creative force behind the scenes, sometimes a scr...

Re: AFI's 25 GREATEST MOVIE MUSICALS OF ALL TIME

Guys, I know I'm going to incur wrath here but....can I just say that I have never cottoned to FUNNY FACE? In fact, it has taken me more than a few times to actually get through the whole movie. And I am someone who loves Astaire, Audrey, and Stanley Donen! I've been trying to analyze why I'm not a...

Barbara was also good as the "Queen Mother" of country music in Nashville (1975) and had a particularly memorable moment sharing her tipsy thoughts on the passing of RFK. https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMDBmNWE4YzEtN2RlMC00M2NjLThlNTQtOTA1OWI2ZmY4ZWJjXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMzU4ODM5Nw@@._V...

Re: July 2024 Schedule Posted, Eva Marie Saint is SOTM

I'm hoping one of the TBA's for Eva Marie Saint is Garry Marshall's Nothing in Common (1986). All the promotional material featured Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason, which is understandable I guess, but it had the unfortunate effect of minimizing the fact that Saint was there in a prominent role as well...

Re: Screen Presence

A good test is whether they can keep you watching even in iffy material and someone who always does that for me is Jane Russell. Underwater! is coming up in June and it's fairly standard Howard Hughes adventure stuff, but he always made sure she was well-showcased and she looks great and gives us fu...

I've never even heard of the Japanese space opera/horror flick Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell (1968), which is part of the Drive-In block, but I'm always up for one of their looney-tunes 1960's mash-ups, so I'll be there. I too am glad to see the Constance Ford block. She and Angela Lansbury were bot...

Re: AFI's 25 GREATEST MOVIE MUSICALS OF ALL TIME

My favorite movie musical never makes any lists ever. I saw a summer stock production of Li'l Abner as a kid and have loved it ever since. Interestingly, Paramount Pictures backed the creation of the Broadway show (1956) with the specific intention of making a movie version. The movie (1959) kept mo...
