Re: MUSINGS, PONDERINGS, RUMINATIONS AND FANCIES

Does anyone know when or why Ellen Burstyn changed her name? She hadn't hit it big when I first saw this so I didn't know who she was (or would be) at the time. According to Wiki: --1932: born Edna Rae Gillooly [now you know why she changed her name!] --flunks out of high school her senior year; wo...

Re: I Just Watched...

Holden, I think it's fair to say that some older gay men still find the word "queer" extremely offensive if applied to them. The assumption that "queer" is an acceptable substitute for, say, "LGBT," is ageist, in my opinion. I have asked other people what the "new ...

Re: MUSINGS, PONDERINGS, RUMINATIONS AND FANCIES

I believe they are thinking of actors, directors, etc. they can get as guests. When the festival began, many of the golden age stars were still alive. That's no longer true.

Re: Noir Alley

I actually like both Faith Domergue and Where Danger Lives . I have no trouble buying Robert Mitchum as a man who acts in irrational ways, in this or any other of his films. His rather bland blonde girlfriend (Maureen O'Sullivan) doesn't need saving, so the damaged brunette who tried to kill herself...

Re: I Just Watched...

Lorna, I am still laughing about the Kelly McGillis comment! I've always liked Anne Hathaway's performance in Brokeback Mountain . Here's this spunky gal so full of life when we first see her, and then we see her drained of life because of what her marriage has been. I don't like the scene where the...

Re: Ranking Only the Best (and the Very Worst) of a Movie Year Project

1969 is probably the most confusing movie year for me. Would I like now what I liked then? The Best of 1969 : They Shoot Horses, Don't They? Hello, Dolly! The Wild Bunch Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice This Man Must Die The Passion of Anna Midnight Cowboy The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie Liked : ...

Re: I Just Watched...

Since we've been posting lists of 1981 films in CinemaInternational's thread, I've had occasion to recall, from the deepest repressed memories, Tarzan the Ape Man (1981), starring Miles O'Keeffe. If you've seen the movie, and God bless you if you have, you may recall that he doesn't speak. According...

Re: Streaming on Criterion in April.

I am fascinated that the films of Jean Eustache are now available. They languished on old VCR tapes for years. I've only seen THE MOTHER AND THE WHORE, which I probably couldn't take in the theater, but is ideal for home viewing in two segments. A great film, if you've seen the Truffaut, Godard, and...

Another note about 1981: I remember that there was a huge buzz about True Confessions before and just after it opened. According to Wiki, that was in late September. True Confessions was expected to be a big player in the Oscars. And then it just wasn't.

To follow up: Holden mentioned that Jennifer Warren had the same finishing school accent as Jane Fonda. Some critics have noted that although Jane Fonda's performance in They Shoot Horses, Don't They? is very good, her finishing school accent is wrong for the part. Later in her career, it's interest...

Re: Ranking Only the Best (and the Very Worst) of a Movie Year Project

Feinberg, because of your list I'm having a flashback to the weekend in 1981 when I went to New York to visit a boyfriend who wanted to see Heavy Metal and Tarzan the Ape Man . LawrenceA commiserated with me when I mentioned this once before. To see either was unfortunate, but to see both on success...

Jennifer Warren had her moment and then sort of vanished. She had a major role in NIGHT MOVES. She played the mother of a teenage model in BARE ESSENCE, which was briefly a TV series.
