Paintings

Do you paint? If you do, are you inspired by the unforgettable faces of film stars? I'm more intrigued by film stills. This is one that Alison, Brenda and Christine will know: http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f376/Owley/Korkarlen-1.jpg I'm too impatient to be bothered with details as you see, so I ...

One of the many trivial matters that occupies my diminishing brain cells: Do folks outside of the U.S. refer to U.S. movies as "foreign films"? Nope, we don't, even though they are technically foreign language here as well. I guess English is so familiar now that it isn't 'foreign', becau...

Indeed she did! I wonder if Gloria Swanson appreciated it. :)

Hello Phil Noir! Thanks for that review. I like that, it does indeed sound like an appropriate farewell for her. It is a good thing she managed to end her career with two decent movies. I saw Show People today. This is an sweet story about a girl who comes to Hollywood, gains stardom and loses herse...

I can agree with that. Although Judith's comments have made me eager to watch this film again. 8) Hedvig, how to you rate the Fred and Ginger movies you've seen. Ballet sequences are complete fantasy and although Fred and Ginger's dances are hardly reality the do sit more with the plot of the story....

I think Judy looks absolutely awful in it. If this was the movie in which the difficulties between her and Minnelli came to a head, it certainly shows, and Minnelli didn't do anything to help his wife look good on screen That could also be because she was ill. It was a troubled production, to be su...

I also connected more personally to The Pirate. Singin in the Rain was more like entertaining fluff to me. It's a great movie of course... I'm not so fond of the ballet sequence there either, but still.

I can understand that, I had trouble getting into it at first. I think, though, that it was not entirely unrealistic. I think people actually used to idolize pirates in this way. I can understand why repressed young women who had their lives mapped out for them would do it, at any rate, it seems lik...

Vincente Minnelli

This musical director certainly possessed a magic touch. I have had mixed feelings about a lot of his musicals, because he could sometimes be so garish and over the top. On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, The Ziegfield Follies, Yolanda and the Thief... they are so full of surreal dream sequences an...

I bought the Saved From the Flames set from Flicker Alley. I had to import it from the US, but it was worth it: this is a very worthwhile collection of quirky films for anyone who enjoys the bizarre. I especially love the early experimental films in sound and colour, and the comedies. They are amusi...

I have also been wanting to watch Follow the Fleet again, after reading this thread. It has been a while since I saw it, and although my recollection of it hasn't been overwhelmingly positive, I think I might just give it another look! I saw Top Hat last Friday with my mother. It is such perfect esc...

I remember seeing clips from that one on the Marion Davies documentary. It looked as if it was one of the earliest examples of her getting to show some comedic skill. She didn't look so much like a boy, but she had a lot of fun with that part, it seemed. Excellent points! The Old West was highly rom...

This thread is so illuminating to me. I never would have thought heat could be "het" in past tense. English is such a rich, incredibly complicated language. I'm lucky I learned it for free in England when I was four, and didn't have to struggle with the simplest grammar later on. We start ...
