It's a movie that a lot of people seem to dislike, but I loved Cary Grant in Hitchcock's Suspicion. Wonderfully ambiguous. And he's terrific as the very nasty hero of Notorious. As for comedy, his finest moment has to be His Girl Friday.

Re: Hitchcock snubbed by cohorts?

Hello, Do you remember the TCM short bit about Alfred Hitchcock? The between movie thing that includes a nasty Hitchcock comment from a movie director named Andre de Toth? Mr. de Toth says something like, "Hitchcock was fat...lazy...and failed to live up to the promise of his early films...&qu...

Re: Howard Hawks

Was Mr. Hawks the second greatest motion picture director, in the classic era 1930 - 1960, after John Ford. ? How would you rank him ? John who? For me the greats of that era, in Hollywood, were: Hitchcock, Fritz Lang and Josef von Sternberg. I'd also rate Preminger, Wilder, Jacques Tourneur...

He's excellent in an underrated and almost forgotten film noir called I Walk Alone. I love him in Elmer Gantry too - a role that could easily have descended into caricature, but never does.

That was one of the many problems with this version. Mitchum was scarier because you could imagine he was for real.

Susan Lenox (Her Fall and Rise)

Susan Lenox (Her Fall and Rise), directed by Robert Z. Leonard, and made in 1931, is one of my guilty pleasures. It’s scorned by the critics, but I don’t think it deserves that scorn. In fact I love this movie. Greta Garbo and Clark Gable are a slightly odd pairing but they do have a real chemistry ...

Raw Deal is a terrific little gritty noir.

I love vampire movies, but I'm not a huge fan of either the Universal or Hammer vampire movies.

Favourite vampire movie:
Daughters of Darkness (1971)

Both great movies IMHO. The 70s was a much better decade for sci-fi, until George Lucas came along.

I couldn't disagree more strongly. Bad horror is killing and mutilation. Good horror is most certainly not about killing and mutilation. Before you judge horror, see these films:

The Haunting (1962)
The Innocents (1961)
Cat People (1942)

Don't forget Sturgeon's Law. When science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon was asked why he bothered writing in that genre when 98 per cent of science fiction is absolute garbage, he replied, "98 per cent of everything is absolute garbage."

Svengali (1931)

Svengali, made in 1931, is not quite a horror movie although it obviously has quite a bit in common with horror movies. It was clearly very much influenced by the movies of the German Expressionist school such as Der Golem and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, with its wonderfully bizarre and disturbing s...

I strongly recommend the 1920 Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. A great performance by Barrymore, and it's better than either the 1931 or 1941 versions.

Not that anyone would watch it for that reason alone. They cast her for her acting, of course.

Out of the Past is my favourite movie ever.

Worth it just to hear Mitchum say: "Baby, I don't care."
