According to her daughter, Dietrich did hate Paulette Goddard, mostly over Remarque. Her bit on Goddard--It was one of those little "pieces" Dietrich used to do that Maria included in her book, like the "Dietrich funeral." She does them in her mother's words, and you can just pic...

You're probably right. Until I started getting into old movies, I'd only seen him in "My Three Sons" and those Disney movies. I had no idea he had made so many great films. He was one of those multi-purpose leading men types and very versatile, I think.

I have got to get FMC! All those movies you guys talk about...sigh.
Anyway, here's a youtube clip of Alice Faye singing "Foolin' with Another Woman's Man." Pure pre-code gold. SPencer Tracy too.

That songs dates back to the late 20's doesn't it? German maybe? Anyway, the Bing Crosby version was great, but who can forget the David Lee Roth version? Sadly, that was my first exposure to the song. Very very weird.

Hey Marco, I agree about Marjorie, Paulette and Virginia wholeheartedly!! And, Paulette would have loved being compared to diamonds. She was known for her jewels, although she preferred rubies best. And, she looked good in them. I remember her coming to our place for a party and getting down on the...

Aha! Gottcha! Not really. I don't care for, see I can't even remember the name, that movie with Hedy and Bob. Everything I read says they didn't care much for working with each other since their styles were so different, and it shows. Also, Hedy said Bob cut the picture so badly that all of her goo...

Claudette is amazing. Several people have mentioned that wonderful, throaty voice of hers--I read a quote somewhere that said she always sounded as though it were midnight and someone's just opened the champagne.

What fresh hell..?

Speaking of really bad ideas, I read today that someone's planning to make a musical version of Harry Potter! Now, I love HP, but that's going too far.

I hate most westerns too, but I agree with you, this one, along with "Johnny Guitar" are worth seeing. Maybe I like them because the main characters include women? In most westerns (and correct me if I'm worng--I won't take offense--westerns are unexplored territory to me) the women seem t...

"Keeper of the Flame" is almost a good anti-fascist film. (If you've seen it, you know what I mean.) It's also almost a good mystery sort of film, maybe even edging into film noir? Anyway, it's pretty good up until the ending. If the plot had included a love story, the Tracy-Hepburn chemis...

I like this movie, but I think the best chemistry isn't between Hepburn and Tracy. It's between Hepburn and Lansbury, because that's where the conflict is. The same sort of thing happened in "Key Largo." Between Bogart and Bacall--nada. But between Edward G Rbinson and Bogie--serious tensi...

Been reading Roger Ebert's book The Great Movies . It's been pretty good so far and has clued me in to a couple of films I'd not seen ("Mr Hulot's Holiday", "do The Right Thing" Exterminating Angel" Cocteau's "Beauty and the Beast" "Fargo") and helped me ...

How about Katharine Hepburn in "Suddenly Last Summer?" Talk about an enabler...and creepy to the nth degree! She wasn't much of a loving auntie either.

It's a movie that a lot of people seem to dislike, but I loved Cary Grant in Hitchcock's Suspicion . Wonderfully ambiguous. And he's terrific as the very nasty hero of Notorious . As for comedy, his finest moment has to be His Girl Friday . I loved "Suspicion" all the way up to that silly...
