I'd never seen Lon Chaney in a movie before--just stills. Wow. I love the way he telegraphed his emotions with his whole body. And Norma Shearer was so fresh-faced and lovely--perfect innocent girl in love. The "people are cruel" theme was hammered home a little hard, though--all those peo...

Watched this movie yeaterday and liked it a lot. You don't see a lot of psychological dramas in old movies until film noir--was this style a precurser to it? Anyone know?

OMG. Frogot about that one. First time I saw "Blazing Saddles" and the entire cast chants "Randolph Scott!" like a prayer--funny stuff!

Movies everyone should see...to get the jokes

The Julie Andrews thread got me thinking about "Sound of Music" which got me thinking about all the pop cultural references made about that movie in other movies and on TV shows and in books and even kids' cartoons. That got me thinking of other movies and how movie makers and writers not ...

Anne, I think the point of showing these films with gay characters who are not treated well, is the same as when TCM showed "Birth of a Nation,"--to show how images of gays have evolved over time. For a long time, gays or gay-ish characters were used as comic relief or villains, just like ...

jdb- I know what you mean about soaps. My sister, Kris and I were hooked on "Days of Our Lives" for years. Kris blames our mom--I'm 4 years older, and when I was in school, Mom would put on the TV and iron or fold clothes or whatever, while Kris played on the floor int he same room, so she...

Hi- I have Exit Smiling on the dvr--planning to watch it later. Beatrice Lillie is one of those people you read about a lot, but rarely ever see in the movies. From descriptions, it sounds like her show was hilarious. She used to sing "There Are Faeries in the Bottom of my Garden," and I r...

I've only seen "magnificent Obsession" and "Lured." "Lured" I loved, even with the melodramatic ending. "Obsession" struck me as totally ridiculous, soap-opera worthy silliness, but I got sucked in. I couldn't help myself--I sat there and watched the whole thi...

I've seen all Hepburn's movies with the exception of "Trojan Woman" and "Madwoman of Chaillot" and in her early films (except "Little Women" and "Alice Adams") she's hard to watch. Or maybe it's just that the material hasn't aged well. And I don't think she al...

How about women who are squares? Can woman be a square? Or are they squarettes?
Anyway, how about Jean Arthur in "A Foreign Affair" scribbling away in her little notebook? Or Katharine Hepburn in "Without Love?"
