JUst saw "Sweeney Tood" last night. Very very macabre. Very Burton. And pretty funny in parts. And Johnny Depp can sing very well. Who knew? Alan Rickman is, as always, excellent as the villian. Helene Bohnam Carter's Mrs Lovett is like a cross between June Cleaver (no pun intended) and Mo...

I didn't get any movies this year (boo) but I got this book called Crazy About Hollywood. It's a fun little trivia book that covers everything from Birth of a Nation tthrough about 2006. It has a little computer thingy attached and gives you random questions to answer and keeps your score. I love it...

And thanks Dawtrina and jbl for the clarification. It's funny--Americans and British supposedly both speak the same language, but sometimes it's hard to tell. I remember reading the Harry Potter books to my kids and explaining terms like biscuits, crisps and trainers to them. Glad bugger didn't come...

sandy-- Really? Because most of my husbands family is from there and I went to school (at OU in the 80's) with a lot of people from the Cleveland area and most of them say/said soda. Oh well, maybe there are differences within Cleveland. Hi Tracey, Very interesting! I must say, I've lived in Clevel...

The Cat's Meow

Has anyone seen this movie? It's about that fateful 1924 trip on William Hearst's yacht, when producer(director? can't remember) Thomas Ince was killed. It features some of the players of Hollywood at the time--Charlie Chaplin, Hearst, Marion Davies, Elinor Glyn, and a young Louella Parsons. It expl...

Dawtrina or whomever wants to chime in-- Hope this isn't offensive. My sister-in-law recently discovered that "bugger" (as in "bugger off") was a swear word and seemed pretty shocked by it. (Apparently my husband's grandfather used to say it all the time and so she thought it was...

Tracey: If you have ION, it will be on next Saturday or Sunday night. EEEwww. I saw the ad for it, and it holds no interest for me, but I'm not into that kind of movie. Which is why I didn't really pay attention to when Hogwatch is on. Actually I was watching all 4 hours of a mini-series called Flo...

Did I make it in time? I hope so! Mr LaSalle, as most people have said, I have read and thoroughly enjoyed your 2 books on the precodes, as well as the TCM documentary. My favorite portions of that were the interviews with the actresses--Karen Morley was especially entertaining. The Production Code ...

What disturbs me the most is that Donohue was calling for a boycott of the film before having seen it because of concern that it would encourage children to read the books . . Generally speaking, most people who call for boycotts have not seen/read the material they are against. They get a hold of ...

I'm a child of the 70's (lord help me) so the movies I remember seeing in the theatre that stand out are from that time and later. My lifetime movies (wait isn't that a cable channel?) would have to be, in no particular order-- The original Star Wars trilogy, Saturday Night Fever , Sleeping Beauty (...

Regional differences are fascinating-I live in SW Ohio and the way I speak is v.v. different from people in the opposite corner (ie, Cleveland). Their vowels are flatter and they tend to say soda instead of pop, for example and in my part of the state a lot of KY has creeped in (for example a lot of...

Have some issues with the best actor/actress lists, but can't quibble too much with the movies. I might make a change or two in the order, but over all, they seem to have hit the highlights.

Hollis--
I agree with you about Raquel Welch. Acting? When did she ever act?
And Demi Moore? Puhleeze.
But maybe I'm being harsh...
