Re: Marlene Dietrich

I think it was mentioned in this thread before, that Marlene was the model for the statue in Song of Songs. I tend to doubt a woman with a figure like that would need or want a body double. Regarding her daughter Maria the shape of the statues breasts were not like Marlene's own. Anyway, I say we d...

Re: Marlene Dietrich

Yes, but in German films? She didn't do many German films with her in an important part, which would ask for a body-double. In The Blue Angel, she for sure didn't have one, Birell was slimmer than Marlene at that time anyway, I assume. I don't know. Seems strange, and somehow I do not really believe...

Re: Marlene Dietrich

I read a few days ago in the internet that Tala Birell has been a body double for Marlene in her German films. I have no idea where this information originates from, but sounds strange for me. Anyway, anyone ever heard of that before?

Re: The Domestic CAT: Feline at its finest!

For those of you who have never seen a "Simon's Cat" cartoon, you are in for something special. http://www.simonscat.com/Films/Hidden-Treasure/ Haha, I love Simon's Cat! The books are funny too, but of course the animated one is better. Looks like inspired by Garfield/Simpsons... haha, an...

Re: Francis Lederer (1899-2000)

I already wrote an e-mail to the producer of the documentary. I doubt I will get a positive reply - if at all. It hasn't been released on DVD, and they usually do not do copies on demand. But, who knows? Maybe I'll be lucky. There's the Austrian Filmarchive... as they try to get hold on movies which...

Re: Marlene Dietrich

We've been to Salzburg some years ago when it was just two of us, I didn't get to go on the Sound of Music tour bus and I don't think I will this time either. Nevermind, this time we have with us our children who are 8 and 5. We are staying at Ruhpolding and then moving further west. My children wa...

Re: Francis Lederer (1899-2000)

I will certainly post my review here, Libertine, when I get to the movies. Sometimes for me, that can be awhile, since we have one TV for three members of my family. :D Hehe, nevermind. I am the same, though I could say I have a TV for myself, but there's too much too watch and I usually watch movi...

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

I noticed I posted this last time in the wrong thread.. I can not delete the original post, but I'll copy it over here... I've seen two movies with one of my favorites: Daniel Auteuil. They're no classic movies, but, well, I will post them anyway. Le placard (The Closet) - It's my favorite Auteuil m...

Re: Francis Lederer (1899-2000)

Oh thank you Moira! I'm a big fan! Lederer is one of my favorite unjustly neglected actors. He is surprisingly overlooked, and I cannot figure out why, except that he is so good without letting you see the workings of it. He just fits into whatever milieu he is supposed to be in . He is what is nee...

Re: Marlene Dietrich

I did have my suspicions Libertine, I was pretty sure you weren't German but thought you were from a country that either spoke the language or was perhaps used to it as a second language. My brother at the moment lives in Prague, his girlfriend is from Madeburg (hope I got that one right) he teache...

Re: Marlene Dietrich

What country do you live in Libertine, if you don't mind divulging? I live in Austria. I honestly wondered when I'd be asked, because I always mention German books. :D But, well, I am not German... 8) I'm not surprised about her resting place being in Europe, although I'd have expected Paris. I thi...

Re: Francis Lederer (1899-2000)

Nah, Ann H. I envy you for being able to visit the Cin. Francaise.. but then, I wouldn't understand a word anyway.

I hope I could save the movie somehow to my hard disk. :(

Libertine - before I go diving into this thread which looks fascinating, I want to thank you for your lovely avatar. Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I watched Five and Ten today, directed by Robert Z Leonard and starring Marion Davies and Leslie Howard. Marion is the daughter of a Five and Ten store proprietor, a fairytale Barbara Hutton, the crux of the story is that she is noveau rich and despite donating generously to charities of the old bl...

Re: Loretta Young

I don't know about the David Niven story although I can imagine the man could charm the birds from the trees so getting put up by one of his co stars is not surprising. He did make The Bishop's Wife with Loretta and Cary Grant just after his wife died, perhaps his friendship with Loretta started fr...
