Re: A Star Is Born 1937/1954
I don't know the story of Mason and the editing. But he's fine as Norman. He was never not fine, as far as I know. He and Judy do a commendable job in this film. Gaynor and March do justice to their endeavor. Barbra and Kris? Haven't seen it. Don't want to! Off topic, I knew I was getting old when I...

Re: James Mason
It's nice to see some activity on this excellent message board! Let's keep it up. This seems to be a big James Mason day. Allow me to repeat what I and others have already said. What a voice. WHAT A VOICE! I assume he did some radio.

Nudity is offensive only if it is gratuitous
Or when in involves Harvey Keitel. Talk about nightmares!

Re: Orson Welles and The War Of The Worlds Radio Play
I hardly ever read books about filmmakers. I generally hole up with a novel.

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
I had a platonic friendship with a woman. She asked me to to take her to see CASABLANCA. I said, "Wait a minute. You insist we're 'just firends', and I'm taking you to the most romantic movie ever made?" Clearly, we're doing something wrong! Was anybody up at 4:00 A.M. today? I couldn't sl...

Re: Robert Ryan Centennial Events
The Set Up is probably my favorite Ryan movie It's pretty high on my list of movies, period. ABOUT MRS. LESLIE. Hmm...I don't know this one. I just checked IMDB and I'm intrigued. It sounds like something I'd enjoy, if not actually rave about. Theatrical, melodramatic. Interwining stories? You say ...

Re: BRAINSTORM on TCM 8/29
Chio, Afraid I don't like NAKED KISS either. (No, that's not a comment on my social life!) Too much psycho-babble. THE STEEL HELMET doesn't fit me. (I'll take one of those fiber glass ones.) But you'll be glad to know my first exposure to SHOCK CORRIDOR was at the Music Box! The NYMPHOS line brought...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
Finally got around to watching my videos. It's a good thing. They were due back today! INVISIBLE STRIPES is not my favorite WB "Crime Doesn't Pay" movie. George Raft is a little too saintly. Mom needs to go out and play Bingo! But it's fun. It's quick and to the point. Fairly exciting. The...

Re: Robert Ryan Centennial Events
This is an actor whose dark and moody presence brings a movie to life. Sometimes in disturbing ways, but that's life! THE SET-UP is so good it's hard to describe. One of the best claustrophobic films around, you have to see it to believe it. Can a movie with virtually no trappings be this good? YES!...

Re: BRAINSTORM on TCM 8/29
I must take a deep breath before saying this. I hate SECONDS and SHOCK CORRIDOR. Maybe I just don't get them. Is "Corridor" a between the lines comedy of sorts? A satire? If not, it's a laughably bad drama! (NYMPHOS!) I'm not a big Fuller fan anyway. He's too much in his head. To be honest...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
My roommate just got a ridiculous cable package. 7,000 channels, or something like that. But by golly! What's the first thing I find? HATFUL OF RAIN! I hadn't seen that in 30 years. It's a good little druggie drama. Translated efficiently from play to movie. Well written, well played. Saying a thing...

Re: BRAINSTORM on TCM 8/29
Holy Frank Cannon! I had no idea the Matt Dillon of radio was a film director. You guys are starting to scare me. How can you know so much and still sleep occasionally? I've never heard of this obscure movie. Sadly, I almost never watch TV on schedule. I turn it on when I have nothing else to do. Wa...

Re: John Ford
Chio Count me among the "almost." You should meet my brother. He claims Ford was THE ONLY great director! Hitchcock did some good work. He likes John Huston. But a truly great movie? A John Ford movie! Jack Favell Dan Dailey... I defy you not to like him in this movie I tried. It can't be ...

Re: What constitutes Noir?
I'd like to add that if we ask "Is Film X noir?", the answer "yes" doesn't make it a better film and the answer "no" doesn't make it a worse film. Some of the most original movies defy categorization. Is THE APARTMENT comedy or drama? Is THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE a thri...
