Re: John Ford

What's the last Ford film you watched? (This is addressed to everybody.) For me it was probably HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY. I watched it for, maybe, the third time. Cinematic poetry. A movie that grew on me. Prior to this viewing, it wasn't one of my favorites. I also watched YOUNG MR. LINCOLN a few mo...

Re: John Adams Miniseries

I should get this series from the library. I believe it's all on one disc. I liked Giamatti in AMERICAN SPLENDOR. He was intense, but good.

Re: What constitutes Noir?

Somebody remind me what BLUES IN THE NIGHT is about? Have I seen it? Did I like it? Is it time for my medication?

Re: BOGART NOIR on TCM 8/17

Also in the book, when Gutman pays Spade and some of the money is missing, he forces Brigid to submit to a strip search. It's cold and humiliating, all the more so because they do care for each other. In the movie, she says, "No, Sam. No!" He buys it. But it's clear there's something unspe...

Re: BOGART NOIR on TCM 8/17

In the book, Spade and Brigid were pretty much in love. It was clear that his final action caused them both considerable pain. I think we're meant to infer that from the movie as well. It's not as clear as it might be. But to fill in the gaps would restrain the breathtaking pace, the film's stronges...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I keep hoping I'll watch my video of INVISIBLE STRIPES and get back to this thread! That's an ex-con drama with Raft, Bogart and William Holden (in diapers, I assume). I checked it out from the library, but can't seem to get around to it. I'm too busy watching REAL TV. The shame!

Re: Abbott & Costello

At the risk of stating the obvious, my mom thought "Who's On First" was THE funniest thing she'd ever heard! She was of the generation that listened to radio, went to movies weekly. I imagine a lot of her peers enjoyed that routine.

Re: BOGART NOIR on TCM 8/17

Where in bloody Hell are my posts going? I must be clicking and running too fast. I click SUBMIT. I see something appear on the screen. I move on. Should I slow down a little? At the risk of repeating myself, I wouldn't call the 1941 "Falcon" more noir than the original. It's just better. ...

Re: John Adams Miniseries

I've heard nothing but praise for this show. Haven't seen it. To respond to remarks from 2008, Laura Linney is never less than wonderful. She's one of the most committed actors around. For a few years, David Morse was in simply everything. I felt as if I rarely saw a movie without him in it! Glancin...

Hmm...I thought I posted some thoughts on THE BIG SLEEP yesterday. Now I don't see them. It's not worth attempting to rekindle the inspration. But if a seemingly incongruent post should turn up, you'll know the source! This is odd.

Re: BOGART NOIR on TCM 8/17

I call MALTESE FALCON one of THE great American movies. Does it signify all the elements that make up noir? Maybe not. But it's dark. It's unpredictable. It's murderous. As John T. Chance said in another genre, "I'd hate to have to live on the difference!" "Falcon" has the slicke...
