Re: Val Lewton Horror Flicks
On another message board, I had my head ripped off for calling Lewton's work "The best suspense films ever made." Maybe I should have said "the most suspenseful..." That's slightly different. At any rate, can you guess why I've switched message boards?

Re: Noir City Visits Chicago
This sounds like a blast, Chio! Most of these movies are unknown to me. Some of them might not be good. But that's part of the fun. I like THE GLASS KEY. Maybe even more than most people do. BLUE DAHLIA is not as good. But it's cute. THE HIGH WALL sounds like some of the dime novels churned out in t...

Re: Val Lewton Horror Flicks
Dormant since 2007, I'll address this thread about a unique and fascinating producer. The epitome of "Less is More," his dark, moody suspense dramas were about what you don't see. What's more frightening than the unknown? Quiet, small and brief, the Lewton films are as low budget as they c...

Re: Helen Mirren hottest over 50 survey
Ms. Mirren is quite the little sex pot! I love that she's, well, a mature woman. The year she won the oscar, she outshined all the young beauties who surrounded her. I give you, The Queen!

Re: Janet Gaynor
I haven't seen much of Janet, but I like a lot what I've seen. She's wonderful in A STAR IS BORN. SUNRISE, when you consider the limtations of the technology, is so good it's amazing. Is it my favorite movie? No. I like a little sound. But I'm able to appreciate the styles of the different eras. I d...

Re: Omega Man
I agree. "Last Man" is quite good. Great, spooky atmosphere, especially on the streets. The Heston film is fine too. But not as neatly constructed. I haven't read anything by Matheson. But there sure were some good movies and TV shows taken from his work.

Re: Pygmalion and My Fair Lady
My feelings on this are scattered. MFL is my favorite musical play. The movie doesn't work all that well. It's not bad. But where's the thrill, the inspiration that is MY FAIR LADY? The film seems to go through the motions, albeit the motions of a magnificent piece of theatre. PYGMALION is also a pl...

Re: TV NOIR at the ROXIE!! July 18-20
Wasn't THE OUTSIDER also a brief series? I was actually a fan of KOLCHAK, THE NIGHT STALKER. It wasn't comparable to serious suspense drama. But it was fun in a ridiculous way. I love McGavin's energy level. The man was quite talented. It's nice that he wound up in A CHRISTMAS STORY. Generations tha...

Re: A Star Is Born 1937/1954
I prefer the 1937 in every way. Cukor's film is fine. The players in top form. But the earlier telling is tighter, more dramatic. The atmosphere is haunting, like a fable. I don't know how to describe the color process, but the result is beautiful! Gaynor and March are wonderful. The writing, by Dor...

Re: Your Favorite Sherlock Holmes Movie?
I like SEVEN PER CENT SOLUTION. The Rathbone films are adorable, in an old fashioned, nostalgic way. But most of them are not all that good. I've seen one Cushing. Liked it. Love Jeremy Brett on TV. Don't know a theatrical film. Billy Wilder's telling doesn't appeal to me. "Seven Per Cent"...

Re: The Killers - 1946 vs. 1964
Being a fan of noir is like being a character in one. It's all about THE CHOICE. Both these movies are quite good. The flashy, colorful look of the remake is refreshing. It's harsh and brutal; nervously edited. It does look like TV. But very good TV. And who hasn't wanted to slap the **** out of Rea...

Amazing stuff, Dewey! I was vaguely aware of DECOY as a child. But I wouldn't remember 1957. Maybe it was in syndication a little later.

Re: My Gun is Quick
I wish I remembered this movie well enough to comment on it. I watched it on TV as a child. That was a LONG time ago! The only Mike Hammer film I know well is KISS ME, DEADLY. Haven't seen Armand Assante in I, THE JURY. Was there another version of that one? It's hard to believe Spillane's best know...

Re: Very Important Zombie Information
This is hard to admit publicly. I think I might be a zombie. I walk the streets at night. Appear from out of nowhere in South American jungles. I'm particularly attracted to women named Barbara. A counselor suggested I take the 20 questions test. I did so. It indicates reason for concern. Are there ...
