Ironically enough I just checked out a couple of Joan Crawford films last night. First I checked out the very seldom seen Letty Lynton , mostly because I wanted to see some more of Clarence Brown's direction. I wish my copy wasn't so poor, so I could appreciate it better, but again Brown's command o...

So I've now watched The Last Flight for a 3rd time, and find it more and more engaging upon each viewing. The performances which I thought were uneven on first viewing, now seem perfectly nuanced and I can't envision them any other way. Gosh what a great film, equal parts curiosity and classic. Does...

I like Fast Workers quite a bit, and have read great things about Downstairs, so I'll try and catch that one.

Agreed on both Midnight and Midnight Mary . Leisen gets a bad rap, but I have a hard time believing Midnight or Easy Living could be any better under Wilder and Sturges. Midnight especially is sublime. As for Midnight Mary, well it falls under William Wellman's remarkable pre-code work, and is among...

Ann Harding, is it absolutely certain that Leisen ghost-directed the film in place of Stuart Walker? I've read that it is true, but don't know what the story is. Perhaps you can shed some light?

Oh and if you are looking for a copy, let me know.

I watched a couple of great pre-code war films. First up was William Dieterle's The Last Flight (1931), starring Richard Barthelmess, David Manners, Johnny Mack Brown, Elliot Nugent and Helen Chandler. I recently read Mick LaSalle's Dangerous Men , and he put the film over huge, so it was among my m...

I watched a pre-coder called New Morals For Old the other night, and was pleasantly surprised. The main reason I was watching was because it had Myrna Loy in it, but sadly she's barely in the picture with only a couple scenes late in the film. But despite that disappointment the film was pretty soli...

I recently picked up a dubbed copy a little while ago, and was very impressed. I don't like dubbing, but I didn't have a problem with it at all in this case. It's well done. It's a great film, and definitely one that deserves more attention. I have to think the lack of acclaim and availability of mo...

drednm, I actually liked Vanity Fair better than Becky Sharp , which was a bit of a surprise because I'd read terrible reviews of Vanity Fair. I thought Loy was very good in it, it's a nice change to see her flex some her dramatic muscles. I wouldn't argue it's a great film, but like you said it's e...

I'm slowly catching up on some of my backlogged pre-codes and silents, and I managed to watch 3 the other night. First up I watched King Vidor's Jack-Knife Man , which I believe is his earliest surviving film. The plot revolves around an old tramp who lives on a houseboat, who ends up taking in a dy...
