Hey Mongo,

love the Myrna/Tux pic, never seen it before. She's no Hep, but I appreciate the effort.

Oooh and there was a great pic of Jean Simmons and Cary Grant earlier, very sharp, more Jean please.

Fair enough. I would argue that given the awful state of the economy at the time, combined with incredible amounts of unemployment, and the general incompetence and indifference of the Hoover government, the opportunity for a large scale revolt was conceivable in my mind. Look at the Bonus Army situ...

Ooh, I'm a big La Cava fan and Gabriel is a fascinating picture. As for the politics behind it, well the picture was completed in 1932, but wasn't released until 1933 and after FDR won the election. Essentially the film reflects the sentiments of the populace in 1932. Herbert Hoover had demonstrated...

Feaito, haven't seen Condemned , though it sounds interesting. I like watching 1929 talkies because they are so all over the place in terms of quality. I find it fascinating to see (and hear) how people adapted to sound. As for Union Depot , I'm a pretty big fan. It's a forgotten gem, possibly the b...

Well for the past year or so I've been working on finishing this list of the 1000 greatest films, so I've become pretty well acquainted with the big 3 (Ozu, Mizoguchi, Kurosawa), and some other highlights of Japanese cinema. As for what I've like best well Ikiru is my favorite Kurosawa, though I rea...

drednm, Temple Drake is fantastic, and it's pretty much all Miriam, I was surprised how good she was having only seen her in comedic roles beforehand. I'd love to see that one restored and get its proper due. As for Gary Cooper, I'm willing to go back and rewatch some of his work with a more experie...

Well I have the R2 Universal Sirk set with this on it, so I'm not sure I'll double dip, but the inclusion of the 1935 original is about as tempting as it gets. Plus I'm a sucker for Criterion, so I may just end up adding this one to my collection.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is fantastic, March is great, Hopkins is great, and Rouben Mamoulian's direction is phenomenal. An absolute classic. I really need to watch Morocco again. I'm a big Dietrich fan, but was underwhelmed when I watched it. I know it's blasphemy to say, but I don't really like Gar...

Well Best Years of Our Lives is among my very favorite films, and March is certainly a big reason why. He wonderfully blends comedy and drama, and his rapport with Myrna is wonderful. Of course there is Design for Living and Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde , which are both wonderful, but you probably alrea...

Thanks for the review Ang, Design for Living is probably my favorite pre-code (well that or Waterloo Bridge ), so I am envious that you got to see it on the big screen. I'm a big fan of Miriam Hopkins, but I can see how she would be an acquired taste for some. She can be pretty earnest. If you get a...

The Misfits (John Huston, 1961)

I finally got around to watching my copy of The Misfits last night, and what struck me most was how profoundly sad it was. The melancholy of the lead performances worked perfectly in conjunction with the stark desert landscape. I've never seen such a heartbreaking performance by Clark Gable as Gay, ...
