The Mating Call is s surprising precode! Superb story and acting! That Thomas Meighan was very manly! He was an older matinee idol, having given up the stage for the fledgling film industry and becoming a favorite of Cecil B. DeMille. His masterpiece was The Miracle Man with Lon Chaney which is now...

Thanks for giving your insights into this set annharding! Sounds like it may only be a so-so representation of Delon's work.

See, now, I find most of the movies McQueen was in to be in immaterial. Some were OK, some not - not important to me - I just like to look at him. I guess I like a man with a lived-in kind of face, although I like some of the "pretty" ones just as well. Have I told my story about talking ...

Here's my review of Little Old New York. Little Old New York, with Marion Davies, is a cute little period piece, nothing heavy, except it is one of her first performances as a comedienne and significant from that standpoint. In most of the movie she's disguised as a boy, although she neither looks n...

Some New Alain Delon Films on DVD Soon

I've only seen three of his films, but he's an intriguing actor. Available for preorder, and being released March 25th on Amazon. This is probably the first time these films have been made available on DVD. Alain Delon:5-Film Collection (The Widow Couderc / Diabolically Yours / La Piscine / Le Gitan...

I can only find 3 Hart films on commercial DVD. I presume so many of his were destroyed by presumption-of-disinterest and subsequent film-rot. From what I've been able to find out thus far, Hart got into pictures with Thomas Ince, who was a personal friend. I'm really not sure about the survival ra...

No I haven't read that book. I'll have to see if the library has a copy. It sounds like an excellent companion to the set. :)

Treasures III: Social Issues in American Film, 1900-1934 (20

I picked up this collection and it's well worth the money! Not only are the prints from the best archival sources, but the menu is very user friendly and the commentaries educational. This third set from the highly acclaimed series produced by Image comes from material preserved by the George Eastma...

Yes Hart was an experienced Shakespearean actor. I heard him talk in a clip once and he had a wonderful voice and would have made the transistion to sound with no problem. :)

charliechaplinfan, I agree about Marion. She was a darned good little comedienne!

William S. Hart was also very like Clint Eastwood in that he popularized the "good bad man", years before Clint did. It makes his heroes more interesting, to be sure. Even though he basically turns over a new leaf as soon as he sets eyes on the good woman, without much internal conflict, ...

I haven't had the chance to get through the whole Treasures I set, but from what I've seen, it's splendid! William S. Hart's avenging angel in Hell's Hinges reminded me of Clint Eastwood in High Plains Drifter . Hart lets his body and the contours of his face express his emotion. This is the first m...

Hello!

Hi! I just registered a couple of days ago. This looks like a great place for classic movie lovers! :D As you can tell by my screen name, I'm a lover of the silents, but also the classics from the 30's, 40's and 50's. I adore the precode stars Una Mekel, Loretta Young, Kay Francis, Ronald Colman, Ri...
