Re: THE CRAZY MOTHER THREAD

Hey there Bronxgirl, How about those Phillies? Beat the Yankees in their own house ! I laughed good and loud at your conversation with mom. It sounds an awful lot like my mom and dad talking. He was a Methodist from South Dakota and she was a Jewish girl from Philadelphia. They met at a USO dance at...

Re: The whiny thread

Alison, I don't think that you and Chris found each other by sheer happenstance. I think that whatever cosmic forces exist in this plane of our existence ordained that you would become as one. The two of you have what so many of us aspire to. This entire chapter of your lives together will only serv...

Re: I'm curious

Nancy, It is in fact a naval term which refers to the sounding of a boatswain's whistle to announce the arrival or departure of high ranking officers. It's also traditional to sound the whistle after a change of command to announce the former skipper's leaving. During WWII there were many junior off...

Re: I hereby organize the first SSO World Congress.

Doesn't anyone remember a certain voice that belonged to Patsy Cline? The angels, as pure as they are, were envious of that voice. She could have, on her own, replaced the sirens who lured brave Ulysses to their lair. Some consider her to have been the first C&W superstar. What an incredible tal...

Re: I hereby organize the first SSO World Congress.

As much as I'd like to be able to hear most of you, there are those times when I'm very happy that this site doesn't provide audio. A very small part of this community must surely be in love with the sound of their own voices. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

"I'm like, you know, um, er, totally down with it, cause it's like, you know, totally awesome, cause back in the day, in the hood at my crib, you know, we must of (not have) been trippin, it was off the hook, like, you know? Ain't a complete sentence when you do your time before you're paroled?

Re: I'm curious

Amazing !! I thought that Latin had all but fallen by the wayside after being spoken by John Wilkes Booth as he jumped to the stage from the Presidential balcony where he had just assassinated Abraham Lincoln. Who could ever forget his immortal Sic semper tyranis (Ever thus to tyrants.) ? I'm left w...

Re: I'm curious

Thank you Judith, I guess my decision to forego college level American history was ill conceived ! Thanks for the refresher course. The unfortunate thing is that no matter how distasteful you may find their political and social beliefs, and there are more than a few of us that do, decorum calls for ...

Re: The whiny thread

Alison, As free with the words as I am more often than not, they absolutely fail me now. You know what high regard I hold you and Chris in. All I can do is say a prayer for you to be strong and trust in the fact that everyone concerned has only your welfare in mind. Whenever I needed someone to talk...

Re: I'm curious

Good morning ChiO, Tell me a little about the elected officials who became known as the " Dixiecrats " during (I believe) JFK's tragically shortened term as President. If memory serves (and I was still a number of years away from the age of majority) it was a number of factors, not the lea...

Wellwhatayaknow!!! What's this ? I wanted to buy some silver screens, and I get directed to a movie site ! Oh well, I suppose I could stick around... I'll have to let me left arm twist my right. I wonder if anyone here thinks that Pink Flamingos is the best movie ever made ! Maybe we could have a po...

Re: What are you listening to?

Tonight? Just two. But I think they're two exemplary albums (I know they're cd's but I'm old so they're still albums to me.) " Learning to Crawl " The Pretenders , and " Stop Making Sense " Talking Heads . I defy anyone to find a better latter day (or any day?) Christmas song the...

Re: I'm curious

Hey there Bryce, Below your emoticon (now there's something that was just waiting to be born that could have stayed in the womb, but that's just one man's opinion) on page 4, there's a phrase without any credit being given to the author. I don't know if it belongs to you or someone else, but I could...

Re: I'm curious

Thanks Judith, You are absolutely right and there's no denying it! Sorry, I couldn't resist the pun. I'm not all that knowledgeable with regard to Monsieur Voltaire (except to know that he was French and predated Mr Henry,) but it goes to prove the adage that "everything old is new again."...
