Re: Ronald Colman

The Unholy Garden was reportedly based on a Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur script absentmindedly derived from an idea the writers thought of while going up in the elevator to discuss their fee with Goldwyn.' I love those Hollywood tales about writers dreaming up movie ideas at the last minute whil...

HAMMY??!!! Dem's fightin' words......
(Not with me. I'll send Burt Reynolds over to see you. He's a big Tracy fan)

You obviously do not care for Kramer as a director but what is possibly over the top in this film?,
unless you're thinking of the storming of the castle walls by the Druids.

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I understand that you appreciate A PATCH OF BLUE more than GWCTD when it comes to racial intolerance. Most film aficionados do - I certainly do. But even though GWCTD is always advertised as a social comedy about race, we know that it was really only about one thing - a vehicle for a pair of legenda...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

It may be bombastic but the two films have entirely different tones and temperaments.
Not really sure there is much of a comparison between the two films.

Isn't he all bearded up in Temple's THE LITTLE PRINCESS (39) playing some sort of Indian raj?

Re: Buster Keaton

Both books cited above are generally looked down by the members of the International Keaton Society. The sections devoted to his career hold up alright but it is always when the writers try to explain his private life that many get up in arms. In a nut shell, these writers tend to project a lot, mak...

Re: INHERIT THE WIND

Every star worth their salt ended up making a movie or two in Europe after the war. Tax codes had frozen substantial amounts of studio money abroad so that films had to made overseas to help those struggling film industries get back on their feet. As for Tracey's alcoholism - it affected him his ent...

Re: On Cukor

Cukor is a bit of an enigma for being a top director. Since he came from the stage I don't feel he ever really developed a true cinematic touch, like a Wyler. Cukor's forte was in the performance. He was very good at achieving that. I never liked the tag 'women's director' that was given him. He cou...

Re: Raoul Walsh

As everyone here has stated Walsh's autobiography is a great read for the many marvelous tales he spins. He speaks of his early days as an actor. A scene called for him carrying the heroine across a shallow stream. Because of the speed of early filmmaking they basically met as the scene was being sh...

Re: INHERIT THE WIND

Since watching Inherit the Wind I've watched him in Father of the Bride , Fury and Big City and read about his acting in a couple of books, he never rehearsed and was unsure about his talent. I don't think Tracy ever doubted his talent. It was probably the one asset of his that he was most confiden...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I'm with you. All of his early 30's movies are interesting and fun but still seem to come to a standstill at some point. In TIGER SHARK it's when Robinson's character marries and the triangle develops. By the mid-30's Hawks was turning out fine movies like CEILING ZERO and COME AND GET IT , but they...

Re: Shepherd Of The Hills

This was made by the same team who filmed TRAIL OF THE LONESOME PINE 5 years earlier and they used the same locations up in the California high country. To me this film always struck me like being one of Harry Carey's silents during his heyday.........if he had ever made a silent in color.......and ...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I like to watch Hawks' films of the early 30's to chart his development as a director. He always had a flair for action (as was noted above) but was still learning how to make the more plot-laden portions of his movies of interest. THE CROWD ROARS (32) is a good example. The movie zips along while o...
