So true, cinemalover. And how could it be otherwise when one's most cherished memories of one's formative years are reading Famous Monsters and other genre publications, visiting the Downtown Theater on Saturdays to catch reissues and new Hammer and AIP releases, and watching Saturday night Chiller ...

jdb1 -- Yes, "Targets" is a gem, and offers a brilliant and touching performance by Karloff that should have at least been nominated for an award. Sadly, "Targets" was not Boris'a final picture (it should have been the "one to go out on"). He made those four terrible Me...

When I was a kid, it was Chaney, Jr., hands down. Primarily because The Wofman had to be the coolest monster for a young boy (along with The Gillman), a much more frightening and exciting character than Count Dracula or Frankenstein's creation. Today, though, with (ahem) more maturity (do Monster Ki...

I agree, Ollie. Just market 'em all. There are still a lot of gems in the Warner gangster library. Interesting how Vol. 4 is being put out so soon after Vol. 3. No year-long wait between releases. Must mean there are a lot of rabid Warner gangster fans snatching these collections up.

Both Cagney and Robinson were great early movie mobsters. Not counting Jimmy's roles as Cody Jarrett and Ralph Cotter, though, I think that Eddie G. was overall a much more ruthless screen gangster. He proved that by his snarling performances in "The Whole Town's Talking" (as Killer Manion...

There are the biopics of Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd that fit into that category. Also "Violent Saturday" is a good addition.

I agree with you you, knitwit45, which is another reason why I said he wore his success well. He did keep his personal life private (which a lot of today's stars would do well to observe). I just remember watching those TV interviews and Heston basically repeating the same things. Like when he did t...

One of the things I always found most appealing about Mr. Heston was that he genuinely seemed to enjoy being a movie star - and he wore his success well. Like Kirk Douglas (until recently, owing to his health), he never refused an autograph either in person or through the mail. even from his home ad...

I'd have to say that with only a couple of exceptions, this is probably Warners weakest "Gangster" box set. With so many genuine gangster films in the Warner library - such as "20,000 Years in Sing Sing", "Kid Galahad", "Doorway to Hell", "Invisible Strip...

Completely agree. I really rediscovered Chester Morris when we finally got TCM up here in Canada. Have enjoyed him in so many films since then. As I said in an earlier post, I much preferred the Morris version of "Three Godfathers" to the later John Ford version. And, of course, Morris was...

"Tales of Terror" comes to mind. "The Black Cat" episode still cracks me up, thanks to Peter Lorre's shameless ad-libbing and Vincent Price's broad playing. The next story, though, "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" is pretty darn creepy. Taken as a whole, I suppose...

Great topic. I really enjoyed the "Abbott & Costello Meet 'The Monsters'" series and also thought Bob Hope's "The Cat and the Canary" and "The Ghost Breakers" were a lot of fun. Could never get into those East Side Kids "haunted house" movies, though. Too ...

Ollie, I grew up on Hammer films and really cannot imagine my childhood and early adolescence without them. Many Saturdays were spent at the Downtown Theater watching the film exploits of Cushing and Lee, and I always enjoyed them. Having said that, I feel that Hammer should have quit while they wer...

Glad you enjoyed it, Ken. My pleasure. I know the movie was once out on VHS. Actually, it's a pretty anemic film (outside of the - ahem - visuals), with Touch Connors proving a most ineffectual hero. In fact, it was listed in "The 50 Worst Films of All Time".
