Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Best moment in MY FAVORITE WIFE - Grant has entered an elevator with his new bride when he spots Dunne in the lobby and as the elevator door closes his body leans 90 degrees in order to keep looking at her. McCarey was supposed to had directed the film but he had another one of his near-death experi...

Re: Charlotte Chandler

I didn't care for her book on Groucho that she wrote around the time of his death and everything else she has cranked out since has never held my attention.

Re: 4th Wall Alert: The Big Heat

If by hero you mean someone who helps the cops out of spite to bring down the thug who did her wrong, or who guns down a woman involved in the crime in cold blood.....yeah....I guess. Maybe she is more of an anti-hero.....or a victim of circumstances. But the film still holds up pretty good after al...

Re: Some Came Running

I also love Some Came Running , however it should be mentioned that the film is quite different from Jones' book, where Dave is killed (by chance) instead of Jenny, who is a very unsympathetic character. Supposedly it was Sinatra who suggested making this change in the movie. He saw it as a great b...

Re: Ruthless (1948)

Come on!!! Jerry gets chased by an electronic lawn mower in that one as he frantically flaps his arms and yells a lot into the camera. What more could someone want in a Lewis film? I never realized that was Scott playing the villain because......well, a remote controlled lawn mower was trying to cut...

Re: The Last Frontier (1955)

I recorded Island of Love, since I remember it was pretty funny. You might remember differently after re-watching it. I stayed with it as long as I did because I was fascinated with Walter Matthau channeling Brando 9 years before the fact by playing a gangster with a wad of paper jammed into his mo...

The 'tribute' was for the good of the morale of the Calvary itself, not for the individual commander.

Re: Westerns

Encore Westerns is always a good place to while away a few hours when you have nothing to do.
The movies are rarely classics (and if they are I would rather go watch them in a better presented format)
but there is generally always something on that will spark a bit of nostalgia.

Re: The Last Frontier (1955)

I think it's Robert Preston Day. I stumbled upon ISLAND OF LOVE (63) today, which he made right after THE MUSIC MAN (62) and it's the same character - minus the music. Preston seemed to of had 3 distinct phases as an actor. He specialized playing weak jellfish in the 40's, more bland manly roles in ...

Re: Ruthless (1948)

While Zachary Scott made quite a few interesting films in the 40's (especially at Warners) and I know many film buffs hold him in some sort of esteem, I have never been able to warm up to him. For me he projected a screen image like a dead fish - all limp and oily,,,,and quite smelly. But it's never...

Re: Some Came Running

Minnelli was a product of the studio system. He was brought west from the NY stage (where he was quite successful as a production designer) by Arthur Freed and was allowed free reign to just wander film sets for the first year to soak up and learn the business. He was coddled and indulged by a magna...

Re: Borders Bookstores Nationwide Closing

Just a scant 10 years ago Border's was my bookstore of choice for daylong bookstore browsing. Their music, books and film selections were eclectic enough that I didn't feel like I was in a mall store. But where it really came in handy was that it was the only place in town here (Phoenix) that would ...
