Re: Randolph Scott - Tribute
The color was a bit "off" as that was the nature of the Cinecolor process, a two-color process that tended to lean toward earth-tones and thus perhaps best used in westerns if it had to be used at all.

Re: Randolph Scott - Tribute
CORONER CREEK will be out on DVD in December in a set with three other Scott westerns: http://shop.tcm.com/detail.php?p=454237&SESSID=eee5136372ee189896f1117020ee53ac It almost plays like a dry run for the later Columbia film THE MAN FROM LARAMIE. In both the protagonist is on a vengeance trail ...

Re: WELCOME TO THE SILVER SCREEN OASIS, ALEXA FOREMAN!
Are there any Bette Davis or Dana Andrews fans out there? Most definitely - I'm a fan of both but it's Mr. Andrews of whom I'd like to speak today. I've never gotten to see ENCHANTED ISLAND in color and I've not seen it since the late 60s. If you could nab that late RKO entry, it would be appreciat...

Re: WELCOME TO THE SILVER SCREEN OASIS, ALEXA FOREMAN!
Thank you so much for being here. Since you're a John Cromwell fan, then perhaps you've done some legwork on this already. Is there a legal reason that has kept VILLAGE TALE off the screen? I've had TCM since the year 2000 and I've been looking for it. Granted I may have missed it, but if it aired, ...

Re: The Best Marlowe
The book itself sounds interesting, I'm always down for something that looks at the genre. It's the review that I find problematic but now I simply have to discover if the "errors" made were on the part of the reviewer or the author.

Re: The Best Marlowe
I was providing the benefit of doubt on the details -- in so doing I interpreted the use of "PI" as "a private individual who investigates the circumstances relating to a crime or a supposed crime, with or without authorization or licensure" and, therefore, a broader term than &...

Re: The Best Marlowe
It's interesting for the number of errors that it contains, such as calling Bogart a PI in IN A LONELY PLACE and saying that there's a PI in REAR WINDOW.ChiO wrote:Interesting book review (and musings) on the PI in literature and film noir is found here.

Julie Harris
NEW YORK (AP) — Julie Harris, one of Broadway's most honored performers, whose roles ranged from the flamboyant Sally Bowles in "I Am a Camera" to the reclusive Emily Dickinson in "The Belle of Amherst," died Saturday. She was 87. Harris died at her West Chatham, Mass. home of co...

Re: The Best Marlowe
Obviously, we have differing perspectives. I don't think it's really fair to compare Altman's Marlowe to the book (or Hawk's film) as he is intentionally placed in a modern world of disillusionment in the post-Kennedy/60’s era. OK, that's fair enough. But Altman (or anyone), could have done that wi...

Re: The Best Marlowe
I watched THE LONG GOODBYE yesterday for the first time since it was released. Truth be told, I didn't like it then. It has nothing to do with the supposedly convoluted story (it really isn't), it's not that they move Marlowe up to the present day or that Gould was cast as Marlowe. It commits the wo...

Just a quick note to mention that actor Vic Lundin passed away on June 29 at age 83. He played Friday in the wonderful 1964 film Robinson Crusoe on Mars and was also the first credited Klingon to appear on a Star Trek episode according to his IMDb bio page.

New York Confidential
The credits come on and one is really set up for something good. Broderick Crawford, Richard Conte, Anne Bancroft, Onslow Stevens, Marilyn Maxwell, J. Carroll Naish, Barry Kelley, Tom Powers, Mike Mazurki, Celia Lovsky... The film starts with location footage and the stentorian tones of a narrator s...

Re: Noir Films
I too love Double indemnity. It really is perfect. I was never a Fred MacMurray fan but he was so good as Walter Neff. But I wonder if he was first choice - he had never done anything like this before. Inspired casting. Dick Powell lobbied for the part, but couldn't convince the powers-that-be that...

I wonder who sponsored the show. Pontiac? I only saw a few of them when it originally aired, but as we owned a Pontiac, I would have noticed if they were the sponsor. Probably just a case of "promotional consideration provided by..." I do recall Pontiac sponsoring Our Man Higgins and the ...
