Re: Me-TV

I know it ages me, but I remember those days too. When I was really little we had one channel and it came on at either 3 or 4 o'clock and signed off at 10pm. What a thrill it was when they started going on at noon during the week and "a the crack of dawn" on weekends...well okay, it was re...

Re: NCIS

It could work, if the replacement is good and the character is strong and likable and can have that wonderful interplay with the other characters. People need to give it a chance. A lot of people thought the show wouldn't last when they killed off "Kate" but it did. "Ziva" is gre...

Re: Me-TV

Keep in mind that every station that carries ME-TV doesn't necessarily carry all of it. Here in my city, the station repeats newscasts and locally produced talk shows from its primary channel for about 8 hours of the day and night so some of the shows on ME-TV aren't seen. Still, I suppose 16 hours ...

Re: The Story of Film series coming in September

I don't know if it still is, but the series was available for streaming on Netflix earlier this summer. I checked out just a little of one episode and it looks like a good one. I didn't have the time to watch the whole series. Probably just as well, it should be great on TCM with intros and and the ...

Re: Saving VHS to SD Cards via a Digital Converter?

I do all my converting from VHS to DVD so I'm not sure what to tell you about the process. However, if it were me, I wouldn't be too quick to buy some electronic device from a store who doesn't carry electronics as one of it's major lines. Same as I'd never order something like that from one of thos...

Re: "Tree Grows in Brooklyn"

Great interview. It's no secret that A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN is one of my very favorite films. I've written about it before and as I'm sure I've pointed out before, the sad thing is that while it's been available on DVD for years in Europe (region 2 discs, not playable on most DVD players in this c...

Lots of Mack Sennett on TCM in September

Better set those DVD recorders and VCRs in the hyper-drive mode. Thursdays in September TCM is showing 4 Sennett features and an astounding 83 shorts. (76 of which are TCM premiers) The shorts will run in chronological order starting on September 6th with THE CURTAIN POLE (1909) and ending with A RA...

Re: Olive Films Licenses some Republic Films

The version I saw at the AFI theater near DC was a UCLA print. It wasn't that bright either but the DVD I have is a bit too bright for my tastes. I think I like my old VHS print better. I use to know a film collector that had an absolutely stunning 16mm print of THE QUIET MAN. Unfortunately, he pas...

Re: Olive Films Licenses some Republic Films

Thanks for the list, Lynn. Seeing THE QUITE MAN there only gets my hopes up that we'll see a restoration. I've heard rumors, and maybe you know if it's fact, that there has already been a restoration done and for whatever reason Paramount has been sitting on it. I assumed that, if true, the studio w...

, A From my first look at him, I disliked the deputy Sheriff, then I learn he's trying to run his own show to become the sheriff, now I see him with Cady's daughter, That whole deputy thing is the only part of the show I don't care for. I suppose they needed a protagonist, to play against the sheri...

Re: Reality taking over

Have you had a chance to see Longmire on A & E, Yes, Moira, my wife and are both hooked on it. It really has gotten to the point where the best and most original shows are being made by the cable networks and not the major broadcast networks. And when they do come up with something original, li...

Re: Reality taking over

One thing to keep in mind is that television runs in cycles. We all remember the westerns cycle, the detective cycle, the medical show cycle and so on. Sooner or later (not too soon for many of us) another cycle will take the place of reality shows. Somebody will come up with new idea like a one-eye...

Re: Big changes at your local Bijou

I am certainly not very knowledgeable about the technical aspects of this revolution, but it does worry me that such a change will alter the quality of actual 35mm and 16mm screenings. Well, that's the big question. The first time I saw a digital film was in 2008 and in my opinion it was terrible. ...

Re: Reality taking over

Anne, You bring up something that is one of my biggest regrets. My wife and I were actually vacationing in London when Hugh Jackman and the original cast were still doing OKLAHOMA! We passed it up because we didn't want to see an American show and a revival at that. We went to Phantom of the Opera i...

Re: Big changes at your local Bijou

Thank you for the link, Mark. This is a huge revolution. At this year's TCM festival, Eddie Muller argued that digital is not necessarily a great medium for preserving films. When 35mm is shown, there will be fewer experienced projectionists, which was a problem at this year's festival. You are so ...
