Big changes at your local Bijou

It's no secret that the motion picture industry is in the middle of a major changeover from 35mm film to digital projection. This has to be the biggest technology change since sound was introduced in the 1920's. Like sound, it will affect how every single theater operates and those that don't conver...

Re: Maureen O'Hara

Moira, It's tough for any of us to make a judgement just from one article. A thought that came into my head was perhaps there's bad blood because Miss O'Hara's personal assistant has her power of attorney and not somebody in the family. Things like that happen all the time. I agree with you that thi...

Maureen O'Hara

I posted this over on the TCM board and thought I would do so here too for any of us who don't go there. Irish Central, an online Irish news site, is reporting that 92 year-old Maureen O'Hara's family is claiming she's a victim of elder abuse. Here's a link: http://www.irishcentral.com/news/Actress-...

THE RED HOUSE...finally!

Ever since I saw it on TV as a kid (I was home sick and not in school) one of my favorite thrillers has been director Delmer Daves often overlooked THE RED HOUSE which stars Edward G. Robinson, Lon McCallister and Judith Anderson. Unfortunately, the film fell into public domain decades ago and has o...

British spies investigating Charlie Chaplin?

Here's a fascinating article about MI5's search into Chaplin's background. Very interesting.I must admit I'd never heard about this before.

Re: I Wake Up Screaming

I wouldn't class it as one of my favorites , but I liked it fine. Betty Grable and Victor Mature are likeable leads, but Laird Cregar was almost too creepy for me. I do wonder as to why they chose that particular title ... it could have applied to the part where Mature wakes up and finds Cregar in ...

Re: Did anyone celebrate Charles Dicken's birthday yesterday?

[quote="moirafinnie". Have you seen Nicholas Nickleby (2002)? I really was charmed by much of that, especially the theatrical allusions in the movie and thought that Christopher Plummer was brilliant as the evil, but essentially lonely Ralph Nickleby. Hi Magwitch, oops, I mean Moira, I hav...

Re: Make It a Double!

I've been researching the theaters in my hometown which involves going through decades of old newspapers looking at movie ads. What strikes me more than the good double features is how many bad ones there were. It looks like the bookers were just filling in slots giving no thought to a balanced prog...

Did anyone celebrate Charles Dicken's birthday yesterday?

I knew I wouldn't have time yesterday,so instead of watching The Super Bowl on Sunday, I watched David Lean's brilliant versions of OLIVER TWIST and GREAT EXPECTATIONS two of my very favorite British films. Dickens has always been a literary favorite of mine ever since I started to read his books in...

Re: Big changes on The Fox Movie Channel.

The one thing I don't see the new FMC/FXMovies to do in their quest to be more like AMC is in the realm of Original Series....If FMC is going down this route, how do they plan to succeed with half classic/half modern and no Original Series? AMC didn't become a pop culture destination without the Or...

Big changes on The Fox Movie Channel.

There's been much discussion going over at the TCM boards regarding upcoming changes at FMC. Basically, they'll be running 12 hours a day of more recent movies, from several studios, with "limited" commercials and 12 hours of Fox classics without commercials. Here's a link to a story in on...

Re: Cry of the Werewolf (1944)

Take two. Did anybody record this one? I missed the first half dealing with a young man who inexplicably wakes up at night and throws his socks out of his crib (yes, we have footie PJ's as well, but they were in the washer). I recorded it. PM me with your mailing address and I'll take care of you. ...

Treasure trove of old TV shows.

Although I've been going to this site for some time, it finally occurred to me that I should share it. The Internet Moving Image Archive http://www.archive.org/details/television has thousands of TV shows going back to the 1940's for free viewing online. You don't have to join or pay anything, just ...

Re: Borders Bookstores Nationwide Closing

I always loved bookstores, but I think the chains didn't take threat of online booksellers like amazon seriously. It was the "if we ignore them, they'll go away" syndrome. By the time they did it was too late as they had lost a good portion of their customer base. They continued to sell bo...

Re: Drive-In Theaters

For three or four summers in the late 1960's (before I decided on a "real" career) I managed a drive-in. We always had kids trying to sneak in by hiding in the trunk. No, I didn't go after them with a bloodhound, I didn't have to. Either I'd get them at the entrance or follow the car into ...
