Re: MUSINGS, PONDERINGS, RUMINATIONS AND FANCIES

My husband and I both enjoyed THE ENEMY BELOW, with Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens ideally cast as captains in this deadly chess match between an American destroyer and a German U-Boat. It's a little talky at first, but then it delivers on all the important matters. A solid film, with Dick Powell ...

Re: January 2024 Schedule Posted, Robert Mitchum is SOTM

Here is my original review of DESIRE ME: I also liked DESIRE ME, although the first half seemed a bit stronger than the second half. With no director’s name on the credits, the early autuerists wouldn’t have known whether they were supposed to like the film or not! Richard Hart did a great job, sens...

Re: January 2024 Schedule Posted, Robert Mitchum is SOTM

Was it Louis B. Mayer who said that DESIRE ME was the worst film MGM ever made? It isn't, and there are discussions elsewhere on this site by some of us who like it fairly well. Of course, it lost money, went through several directors, injured its star, so it's not one the studio would brag about. I...

Re: Noir Alley

Though STAGE FRIGHT isn't one of my favorite Hitchcocks, I do like the flashback. I'm sorry I missed Eddie's comments. In general, I don't think of Hitchcock as being noir, though STRANGERS ON A TRAIN is an exception.

Re: March 2024 Schedule Posted, Debbie Reynolds is SOTM

Thank you for posting the schedule. Some items that might be missed: connoisseurs of camp must see A LION IS IN THE STREETS. Anne Francis as a swamp gal named Flamingo? Jimmy Cagney as a Cajun? HONEYMOON FOR THREE, listed as a romantic drama, is in fact a very funny comedy. George Brent had a flair ...

I think Far and Away also shows a beautiful house near Killarney which is a major tourist attraction. We're not exactly raving about the film, are we?

The Night Fighters and Shake Hands With the Devil are two films that would be good for an Irish day.

Re: Theater

I actually think Gloria Swanson's performance in the movie misses the opportunity to make Norma a little more human and less vampirish. To see a few traces of the Norma who does the Chaplin impersonation--smart, funny, talented--or at least someone who once was all those things--would make a richer ...

Re: I Just Watched...

You guys are making me laugh WAY too much! I thought Lorna must be exaggerating about Ann Turkel and the green jumpsuit and the hair. No exaggeration at all!! And that was AFTER I'd been laughing at Joan Van Ark's hairdos! With the puffy and curly and dangling hairdos, you'd think Ann and Joan were ...

OMG, I used to have a shirt exactly like the one Matthew Broderick is wearing. I would have bought that jacket, too. Also the jacket Paul Benedict is wearing. And I had a curly perm back then. Wait, that's TMI.

Kay Francis. Dorothy Mackaill. Ann Dvorak, as a leading actress.

Pre-code, Miriam Hopkins is a bigger star than Bette Davis. That will change.

Re: I Am Cuba (1964)

Here was my take on first seeing the film: Mikhail Kalatozov’s I AM CUBA (1964) has some amazing camera shots and gives us a look at the First World metropolis Havana was before and just after the revolution. The pro-Castro and anti-American propaganda will appeal to that audience, but most people w...

Re: It Was a Very Good Year

Ah, 1947. You might be hard-pressed to find another year with so many outstanding performances by women, none of them nominated for Oscars. Women today would kill for roles like these: Ida Lupino and Fay Bainter in Deep Valley Deborah Kerr and Kathleen Byron in Black Narcissus Barbara Bel Geddes and...

Haven't seen The Egg and I. By Hollywood's counting, Great Expectations was a 1947 film, and it certainly would be on my list.

Re: It Was a Very Good Year

My favorite year of the classic era is rarely mentioned as one of the great years, yet for sheer entertainment value and for films that make a personal connection with me, no year equals 1947. These are films I could watch any time they are on TCM. I haven't included foreign films, though Les Maudit...
