Re: Musical Influences

I do like improvising, but it's got to be done within a structure for me to really go for it. Otherwise it's just doodling. Wendy, Looking back I found this note and the funny thing about it is "noodling," as I call it, is what people find interesting about the way I play. Often on Sunday...

Re: Giallo

Revisited this one the other day & realized I'd never talked about it in this thread except for a listing mention on the initial post. A great 60's pop-art film, groovy soundtrack, & amazing cinematography that is a nice intro to the giallo genre. [youtube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4Y...

Re: The November 2014 Schedule for TCM

Well, I can see from your avatar you like Peeping Tom (1960). Most of these movies are a continuation of that style & many give definite nods, or pay homage to Hitch, or Powell. I am very much in line with the idea that a movie should be built on some kind of storyline and have something to say....

Re: The November 2014 Schedule for TCM

Joel, Thanks for mentioning Cat o' Nine Tails ! This sounds like a good intro for wussy me. :D :D Wendy, I honestly think you are assuming way too much from these movies. Many of them are not really that violent--they are actually suspense thrillers, not unlike something Hitchcock would have made. ...

Re: The November 2014 Schedule for TCM

Lots of good stuff coming on this month, but I'm most enthused that TCM will actually be showing a legit Giallo film, with Dario Argento's The Cat O' Nine Tails (1971). This film stars Karl Malden and James Franciscus, has some great music by Ennio Morricone and very little in onscreen violence, or ...

It's about half & half for me: Top Tier: The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970) A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin (1971) Short Night of the Glass Dolls (1971) Don’t Torture a Duckling (1972) Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I have the Key (1972) The Perfume of the Lady in Black (1974) Deep Red (19...

Re: Valerie & Week of Wonders

It was my pick of the month & I thought it was a great pairing w/Juliet of the Spirits (1965) as both films deal with the idea of a woman finding herself. Here's a bit more info from a favorite blog of mine: http://tinyurl.com/kvhpnqc

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

The Brood & The Fly are two cases where effects go hand in hand with the storyline and help to translate (as well as transform) our perspective on the characters and their world. I am not a lover of gore, but I do understand that when such things are used correctly they can enhance a film rathe...

October Schedule 2014

Although there's some great stuff showing this month, most of the horror selections have played on TCM before. A notable exception is Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970). This unconventional film from the Czech republic is visually stunning and a treat for the senses. Don't miss it: [youtube]http...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

Karloff is one of those guys that never gives a bad performance & while I love Bedlam & The Body Snatcher , my fave Lewton/Karloff combo would be Isle of the Dead . He's just a little more subtle in the role & the film builds slowly to the climax, where we are uncertain of everything &am...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

wo of his westerns are high on my list, "Gunfight At The OK Corral" and "Last Train From Gun Hill," where his anger is more realistic and maybe more offset by costars. I think certainly so in "Gunfight." Lancaster's calm provides the right opposite attitude there. (Act...

Re: Fellini's Roma (1972)

I'm not aware enough of Fellini's work, something I should remedy. Can anyone recommend me a couple of good ones to start with? The best way to see Fellini is to watch his work chronologically. If you jump to Roma or 8 1/2 it's very difficult to get into his mindset & realize the evolution of h...
