Marathon viewing...

You really had to make a major commitment to those (pre-VCR) '70's mini-series. Didn't they air on consecutive nights? I remember tuning in a coupla nights for "Roots-"including the first night-which featured a lot of nudity! That was pretty exciting for a teenage boy to see all those bare...

Urban angst circa '63...

I'm looking forward to re-visiting this gem. I've seen a lot of Natalie Wood's childhood films lately-"Miracle On 34TH Street,""No Sad Songs For Me" and the one with Fred MacMurray and Irene Dunne (?) I'm anxious to see her in an adult role...and what an adult role this is! I rem...

Silent stars speak...

Thank you so much for spending time in our community, David...if I may be so bold as to call you by your first name. "Saved From The Flames" sounds great. Looking forward to that. Any chance of seeing you on TCM promoting it? I'm very curious about a Robert Florey movie from '36-"Holl...

"No artificial additives..."

It took a few years, but I finally acquired a taste for "Sugar Cookies." This 1970 kinky dark comedy/"sex film" melodrama was directed by Ted Gershundy (who has a cameo in a "sex film" within the "sex film" and was married to star Mary Woronov at the time,) co...

Mind over matter

I have to say that I admire Val Lewton very much. He was a "master" at creating atmospheric (psychological) "thrillers" on miniscule budgets. He also gave us fascinating glimpses at various "sub-cultures" and their beliefs/practices/rituals/traditions...religious groups...

"Gettin' my kicks..."

The pros at MGM really crafted a tense and visually stunning noir with "Act Of Violence" from 1949. Great direction from Fred Zinneman and well acted too. I especially liked the performances from the women-Janet Leigh, Phyllis Thaxter, Connie Gilchrist (I always love seeing-and hearing-her...

Do sit-coms count?

I never realized there were so many 30 minute westerns?
What about "F Troop" and "The Best Of The West..."

The Usual Suspects...

I just noticed that there were (count 'em) 59 users online October 22 11:59 AM. (Eastern time, of course.)
Well, what did I miss?

"Go, girl, go!"

"Asta" la vista? I enjoyed the musical numbers and glorious Technicolor of "Let's Do It Again-"not to mention that fabulous mid-century Manhattan apartment...Jane Wyman had a great time "channeling" Irene Dunne, but Ray Milland's role just wasn't "meaty" enoug...

"Walking through the crowd..."

Lorre was a fascinating man and a master at "complex characterization-"as Dewey pointed out. Thanks for pointing out "The Face Behind The Mask," Judith and Dewey. It's one of my favorite performances and much too under-rated and under-appreciated. Robert Florey began his career m...

Thanks, Ciao! Patsy, for your "riff" on "Tokyo Drifter" and Suzuki. It's the only Suzuki film I've seen...and it is a treat for the senses! I really love the way that the "theme" song is heard throughout the film in various ways-for great "familiar" effect. I ...

"Hey, Mr. Cunningham."

For me, there is no other movie that has found such a profound resting spot in my heart and mind and soul than "To Kill a Mockingbird." The "passions" of all the people (in front of and behind the camera) responsible for bringing us this "ode" to the beauty (and horror)...

Where were you in '63?

I was thrilled to "receive" season one of "American Dreams." I didn't watch this show until the final season. (My faves are always cancelled!) I found it to be quite a thought-provoking nostalgic look at the tumultuous early '60's-through the eyes of a family (and all their frien...

Merry Kitschmas

I really miss all the "variety" shows of the '70's-especially the Christmas episodes. I was exicited to see the DVD release "The Sonny & Cher Christmas Collection" a couple of years ago. Talk about a groovy Christmas. I've decided that my "theme" next year will be &...
