Re: Mary Astor

I believe TCM is broke. I've been unable to interest them in any projects for a while now. Whatever budget they have to license new films seems to be going to pet projects of various hosts and "event" things like the National Registry of Films. But this is just my opinion.

Re: Marion Davies on TCM

The final night of the Star of the Month salute to Marion Davies starts tonight with Peg o' My Heart (1933). This is one of Marion's most charming talkies and there was a significant write-in campaign for her for an Oscar. She was also elected to the Academy in May of 1933 as sort of a precursor of ...

Re: Mary Astor

Here's 15-year-old Mary Astor in front of the old Belgrade Hotel in Brother of the Bear (1921), her film debut. This is about 5 miles from where I live. The hotel burned to the ground in the 1950s.

Re: Mary Astor

I have two of Mary Astor's first films, which were filmed in Maine in 1921. She was 15 years ago and starred in Brother of the Bear , which was her film debut) and My Lady o' the PInes . The former was filmed about 5 miles from where I live at the Belgrade Hotel on Long Pond. The hotel was one of t...

Re: Marion Davies on TCM

The dream dance number "We'll Make Hay While the Sun Shines" is one of the more bizarre Hollywood production numbers with Marion Davies and Bing Crosby watching themselves perform a dance number with scarecrows and farm hands. Crosby was never in better voice than in his film. He also sing...

Re: Wallace Reid

Copyrights have ended for all American films 1927 and before. The only "control" anyone has over the films in the public domain is if they are in private archives (like Eastman) of if there are donor restrictions (some of these go back to the 1970s) on films that have been donated. If film...

Re: Wallace Reid

And the irony is that the train accident that injured Reid as they were transporting crew and equipment to the lumber camp in Korbel, Calif. was virtually re-created in the film because it was part of the storyline. And so Reid had to re-live the nightmare.....

Re: Marion Davies on TCM

First talkie was the Oscar-nominated Hollywood Revue of 1929 . First starring talkie was Marianne , which was made first as a silent film with Davies starring with Oscar Shaw and then completely remade as a talkie with Lawrence Gray as co-star. The silent version was shown in the sticks and overseas...

I sure hope these aren't new versions, as I copied all of them from last TCM broadcasts & enjoyed them all.
Same versions TCM always shows ... from the Warners/MGM library....
