Re: Gone With or Without fanfare

Very sad. Edward Herrmann has died. As if we needed one more to go out on this year. A talented actor (and nice guy) who personified President FDR and also gave a memorable turn as baseball great Lou Gehrig. He also turned in one of the creepiest, most unsettling performances I can remember seeing i...

Re: Gone With or Without fanfare

This is so strange. I swear just this morning I got to thinking of the aged celebs who are still with us: Kirk Douglas, Olivia de Havilland - and who I figured was the oldest: Miss Rainer. And now to learn this, especially as the year draws to a close and another legendary name must be added to the ...

Re: CANDIDS II

Love that expression on Marty Milner's face. As if he's thinking: "What am I doing playing Adam opposite Mamie Van Doren's 'Eve', being co-directed by Mickey Rooney in an Al Zugsmith production?"

Re: Gone With or Without fanfare

Yes, and that's especially tragic since it appeared that Dean simply lost an interest in living after Dino was killed.

It is comforting to know, however, that he was with Jeanne when he passed.

Re: Gone With or Without fanfare

Yes, you're right, R.R. The Little Tramp is another who left us on Christmas Day. I was very privileged to see one of Dean Martin's final shows at Bally's. He certainly was not the Dino of his years as a Rat Packer that played The Sands, but you still could not help but to feel a certain electricity...

Re: CANDIDS II

Well, if I may. I conducted two of the last interviews John Agar ever gave: One for the nostalgia radio station I used to announce at and a print piece for Filmfax . I also admit I belonged to the John Agar Fan Club and wrote pieces for that publication. Apparently, there was a point in time when Jo...

Re: CANDIDS II

Betty Grable was the one of his "serious" romances that George Raft sincerely wished had led to the next level: Marriage. Grable herself said she fell so hard for George that she would have married him the first week she met him. They became the Hollywood Dream Couple back in the early 40s...

Re: CANDIDS II

Wow Joe -- Gladys Cooper was a honey! I remember her best as the invalid haunted by phone calls from the grave on "The Twilight Zone" episode Night Call (scripted by my fave, Richard Matheson). As for Sir Ralph Richardson . . . As the Crypt Keeper in the 1972 film "Tales from the Cryp...

Re: CANDIDS II

You know, a lot of people have complained about Dick Van Dyke's performance in MARY POPPINS (particularly his cockney accent). Well, I for one feel that his performance makes the film - fun and energetic, and he darn well should have at least been accorded an Oscar nomination for his role.

Re: Rose Stradner (1913-1958)

Luise Rainer would have been an interesting casting choice, Moira. I could accept Miss Stradner in the role but I don't think I could have followed her career with much enthusiasm or interest. But the kid (no offense to Douglas Scott, he was just following directions, a la Donnie Dunagan in SON OF F...

Thank YOU, as always, Joe. But the movie really is a stinker. BTW: Margot Kidder also appeared in it.

Re: CANDIDS II

The happiest of birthdays to two great gentlemen: Mr. Van Dyke (as sweet in person as you would expect him to be) and my fellow Canadian Mr. Plummer (another gem with whom I had the pleasure of acting in a simply terrible horror movie made here in Winnipeg called CLOWN AT MIDNIGHT, filmed at what is...

Re: Rose Stradner (1913-1958)

Moira, watching today's TCM showing of THE LAST GANGSTER for the umpteenth time ('cause I'm simply an Eddie G. fiend) I was concentrating on Rose Stradner's performance as Joe Krozak's somewhat befuddled wife and while she played the part admirably, there was something about her screen personality t...
