Re: New Design of the SF Chronicle

Couldn't agree more. It's my guess that they're hoping esubscriptions will be the future of publishing.

But, what do I know? I was sure Cable would never catch on, at least not unless the kept advertising off all the pay sites.

Re: HOT OFF PRESS!

Wish I could take the blame for a mistyping, but that's the way it was in print. Maybe they were trying to throw guessers off?

GUESS THE MOVIE! Couldn't resist passing on the following item in its entirety from today's San Francisco Examiner : Epic cinema: David Lean's Academy Award-winning blockbuster from 1961, which follows T.E. Lawrence's adventures in the Middle East during World War II, is being shown in a high-defin...

Re: Favourite Time Travel Yarns

Let us hope (however unlikely) that it is necessary to save a spot in this record of favorites. From a listing of upcoming Fall films: " Interstellar (Nov. 7) Matthew McConaughey - already an expert on time being a flat circle, thanks to True Detective - has his first post-Oscar turn in Christo...

Re: Basil Rathbone

L.V., Rathbone in Witness for the Prosecution. Sounds fascinating. Which part did he play (I'd guess Sir Wilfred)? That's right, and he spent most of the play sitting at the Defendant's Table and looking at (reading?) papers that might have been the script. Old age is a beast! Even Lord Olivier adm...

Re: Basil Rathbone

Thanks, Joe, for rewaking this thread so that I read the whole thing. He was one of my favorite actors, even after one reviewer referred to him, typesetter error I'm sure, as Rasil Bathbone! And thanks, Moira, for filling us in on his later years. At least now I know why, when I spent a summer doing...

Guess my age is showing. Well, it was quite a few years ago.

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...

If I remember correctly, that's the film with what was my favorite closing gag until "Nobody's perfect." I mean, of course, the discovery that the cigarette-smoking Invisible Man is in the boat with them.

Re: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941)

There sure have been a lot of actors who tried to live up to the character, with varying success. The problem for most seems to be that they're thought of as too nice for Hyde or too sinister for Jekyll It's really a part you can sink your teeth into. (Oops, wrong monster!) I' greatly enjoyed Mary R...

Re: Truly Guilty Pleasures

A great idea, and well worth lots of contemplation. For now, I agree with you on "The Waltons." Maybe a little sugar helps the medicine go down, but too much equals diabetes. Still, I suppose they didn't feel they'd keep their audience if they didn't lighten things up. (Can anyone who saw ...

Hi, Judith, from one of the older new members (or is that newer old?).
Anyone who loves Stan has got to be a lot of fun to know. Will be looking forward to your posts.
And, by the way, you're not alone. Before I checked the caption, I, too was sure it was Sir Paul.

Re: On-Line quizzes of newer movies.

Thanks for finding and posting this. Lots of fun on the first two, although they were all either too easy or just a wild guess. By year is just too difficult for me.

Wish they'd do something with more classic films.

LEONARD MALTIN.... Like with any author or critic, I don't always agree with every one of his reviews I, too, still depend on him for fast answers. My favorite review of his, and one he most certainly got right, was when he was doing oral reviews on Entertainment Tonight. In total: "Transylvan...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Agree that Detective Story is a prime example of how to turn a play into film. My favorite story about the play/film comes from George Voskovec, who was appearing in The Chalk Garden in Ogunquit when I was doing a season of Summer Stock some 60 years ago. He told us that he had been up for a part in...

Re: The Lost Chase-Helen Mirren

It's a 1996 TV movie known as Losing Chase in the US.

I love everything Mirren does, and will certainly search this one out.
