Re: FEATURES ON TCM

These films are great for illustrating "Strong films need vicious, hate-able bad guys" and Robert Ryan and Lee Marvin are SO GOOD at being totally vicious bad-guys. For whatever else these films have going for them - and there are a large number of solid performances in both - I think the ...

Re: The whiny thread

Hardware? Ugly? His name isn't Victor von something-or-other, is it? He didn't, like, wait for a storm to raise your hospital bed up into some storm?!! Jeepers - and this weekend it sounds like there's going to be more falls in store. I was hoping we'd keep all of that here in Texas, but someone ope...

I did get a good copy of this, if anyone needs one. I would have glossed right over it except for a very wise tip, so I lucked into this one.

Re: Cary Grant The Early Years

I'm looking forward to these because I've never seen them AND for Laughton's inclusion as well. I have a hard time believing the name "Cary Grant" can't find a purchasing audience, along with about 100 other names.

Re: Ladies with great legs!

MichJ, I'm with you. When Wendy writes "NOT!" about Popeye and you've clearly pointed out what we all see - tattoos on arms that fire cannons, or we see become animated dynamos - how can ANY WOMAN who claims to love big, strong arms NOT love Popeye?!! Boy - some women-! There's just no ple...

Re: Miss Goddess - Questions on The Big Country

I don't care for this film, but this thread's writing is THE reason I'll be watching it again soon. They've got it playing at a film-festival weekend, and a chance to see this on the big screen is too much to pass up - now that these comments have me stoked.

Re: It's official - we're collecting Musicals

MrsL, exactly. The WHY is what I'm curious about. Why do I find some musicals either disinteresting (almost offending, pushing me a way, ewww, no, yuck!) while others are just fine, and another set pulls me into their orbit. Your Horror Movie comment is parallel to mine - THEM has such terrible mons...

Re: BBC Suggestions

A series I don't re-watch often but think of it a lot - FOYLE'S WAR - about a police detective in WWII. He occasionally gets into Nazis and spies, but dealing with murderers who use the war to help cover their tracks. Heists, too.

Re: The Warner Archive

I think the Dragonwyck-as-horror is exactly why I rail against so many corporate rightsholders - they're warehouses, not holders. Not keepers. We see so many misguided labeling efforts from them, probably spending weeks of 'committee time' instead of just an hour and a half of WATCHING the film! Jee...

Re: It's official - we're collecting Musicals

I certainly think Turturro's argument is interesting when he proposes "Almost everyone has done this at some point..." At the same time, filming commonly-accomplished tasks would put us into everyone's bathroom a time or two a day. Yeah. Realistic. But desirable? Is that the goal of film? ...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Christine, thanks for this tip. We got onto AMAZON FR and ordered the larger sets of the Gaumont disks, plus we found a new Gene Tierney collection with a couple of (SADLY - ANGRILY) "unique in Europe" films. Grrr. This is the price we pay for not traveling for 2-3 months in Europe every y...

Re: It's official - we're colleting Musicals

Have you discovered what elements you use (even subconsciously) to 'suspend belief'? This is part of my "Donating a positive emotion" to a film. It's as if by walking in, sitting down in front of the screen, I've just clicked off certain critical analytic switches in my peabrain, and almos...

Re: It's official - we're colleting Musicals

Musicals might be the litmus test for me. I have a long-standing prejudice against them, so finding ones that I like is a numeric oddity and, now, I'm finding large numbers in a certain era. It makes me wonder about the Why's and Why Not's. Why are these early versions so enjoyable to my palate? How...

I love the 3rd-from-the-top photo about "much obliged", the way he cocks one eyebrown oh-so-slightly. Just perfectly. His expressiveness is dead-on.

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Christine, you'd mentioned other Gaumont films or better qualities. Are you seeing a lot of those being made available in Europe? (I haven't even checked - I can get onto AMAZON.FR and found out, but I was just curious if you're seeing more of those being placed onto DVDs. I hope so. I might not col...
