Re: Gone With or Without fanfare
Plenty have been left out since this thread died but maybe there is some catching up to do. Olivia deHavilland has died. I always thought that Olivia was a somewhat delicate lady. At least that was her 1930s impression. Delicate people don’t generally live until 104 so there was something tough and ...

Re: What recent films have you seen?
One thing I can't get any fun out of is Super Hero/DC Comic films. Watched "Wonder Woman" (2017?) last weekend. I thought it had a bit of a twist when it shows we are dealing in a WW1 setting. Before a plane crash about 15 minutes in we have no idea when it is set. Somehow there is an isla...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
The Cheat (1915) - This film really blew me out of the water. Sessue Hayakawa was a revelation, so restrained, and oh so magnetic. It's a shame he didn't get a chance to be a regular leading man (as opposed to the villain or the doomed lover) due to stupid miscegenation laws. The plot involves Haya...

Re: Randolph Scott - Tribute
Going back almost 13 years now I am surprised the "Hangman's Knot" is mentioned only in passing. Our Man of the Thread stars with Donna Reed, Lee Marvin, Claude Jarman, Jr., and Ray Teal. A band of Confederate soldiers attacks an Army gold shipment and find out at the end of it that the wa...

Re: Comedy - Romantic and Otherwise
What Did You Do In The War, Daddy? is a robust and, at times, very funny comedy. At other times it lulls some as it really is a bit too long. The story involves a WWII American army unit capturing a small Italian town where the soldiers there will gladly surrender the next day after they have had th...

Woman On The Run is a drama starring Ann Sheridan and Dennis O'Keefe. Her husband witnesses a murder and then he goes on the run for fear of becoming a target himself. Ann, along with the police, look for him. Ann enlists an eager O'Keefe to find him. Ann is a smart aleck the whole way through and m...

Re: Morse prequel
You are very welcome. That is a game I play on most all of the British police dramas. There is a crowd that seemed to migrate through them all. I also am quite fond of Foyle's War. Would love to have a voice like Michael Kitchen.

Re: Morse prequel
The series is as good as always. It is tough to find the earlier episodes unless you are streaming one of the British apps but if you can follow it it is worth it.
Maybe in retirement one could watch all three series in order. Assuming .you live long enough to do it.

Re: Westerns
The Hateful Eight. A long slow dialogue laden western that tries to be too clever and winds up being too dull for my taste. What is essentially a premise that is as old as westerns itself just takes too long to get where it is going. Characters are vivid enough. We learn a lot about them but not alw...

Re: What recent films have you seen?
There is no place dedicated to documentaries but here I will talk a little about "They Shall Not Grow Old." A documentary, mostly, about the British soldier in World War 1. It is a marvel of modern technology brought to the static century old film that is only known about the war. Taken fr...

Re: What recent films have you seen?
How is this for pulling up an old thread? The Foreigner. This is really a Jackie Chan movie that is only partly a Jackie Chan movie. Jackie is a little older now and while he still has some moves they are in keeping with a man his age and the character he plays. The plot centers on his finding out w...

Re: Westerns
I have been stuck on westerns lately. STARZEncore has plenty of them if you don't mind the status of "entertaining." Today it was "Six Black Horses." It starred Audie Murphy, Dan Duryea and Joan O'Brien. Notably, it was written by Burt Kennedy. Knowing that from the credits it wa...
