Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Ooh, I'd love to see Stella Maris, Fer! You are so lucky. I've only seen photos from it. Thanks for writing back about Smouldering Fires , you two. I agree this film needs a restoration, but I've long given up on any silents that don't have the four or five major stars getting restored. Fer, that's...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

:) I've already mentioned this several times. I think KIKI (1926) is one of the funniest films ever made. While not a debut, this was the first time it had aired on Silent Sunday Nights. I was pleased that TCM was running it again, since it has been a vastly overlooked movie for many decades. Who wo...

Re: Welcome to Steven Bingen, July 20th-22nd

Mr. Bingen. :o I'm catching this a bit late. Very interesting and informative to be sure. I'm someone what surprised to learn that THE BIG PARADE one of my all time favorite films, was one of the very first pictures produced on the lot. I did not know this. I guess since I think of MGM beginning in ...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Christine, Featio, :o Wow! I did not know that THE RED DANCE was on French TV last month? Apparently, it was a good print, but did it have a score? No one mentioned that here as far as I can see. Just got the new Milestone May Pickford RAGS And RICHES Blue-ray collection containing four films. 3 of ...

Re: Welcome to John Bengtson- April 24th-28th

Mr. Bengston, :? I was curious if you have any suggestions as to what to do to get the major studios to at least take a decent look at their Silents Library. There are so many great films that are held hostage by idiotic copyright extensions that should have ended decades ago. For instance, I find i...

Re: Welcome to John Bengtson- April 24th-28th

Mr. Bengston, :) Thanks again for your honest response. By the way, there is also a brand new book out on Colleen Moore by Jeff Codori that was a decade in the making. :? Just a quick inquiry here. I was wondering if you had seen the Silent version of Lloyd's WELCOME DANGER? I know that Robert Israe...

Re: Welcome to John Bengtson- April 24th-28th

Mr. Bengston, :) Thank you for addressing my queries.Interesting response to be sure. I've learned a great deal from all the questions you have answered from the various patrons of this board. While I started my Silent film adventure mostly enchanted with the comedy genre, I have to admit that the m...

Re: Welcome to John Bengtson- April 24th-28th

Mr. Bergston, :) Welcome to Silver Screen Oasis. I have enjoyed reading all your blog posts greatly. They are fascinating and extremely well researched. I too I'm curious to know your favorite Silent comedies. Favorite Lloyd film, and those you especially revere outside of the works of the Big Three...

Re: John Gilbert

 Holy Smoke! Jack sure had an abundance of hair when he was that young. Amazing still. Does this film survive at all? :) Here's a still from the film that made him a Superstar. King Vidor's HIS HOUR (1924). Based on the Novel by Elinor Glyn. No doubt He is angry because the Princess neglected...

moirafinnie, :) Here is more breaking news that ties in with this thread. Herbert Brenon's THE SPANISH DANCER Starring Pola Negri and Antonio Moreno will be seen close to it's entirety for the first time since it's original release back in 1923. Elif of The Netherlands Eye Institute broke the story ...

LILAC TIME 35 Millimeter Screening March 7th!

:D Yeah! George Fitzmaurice LILAC TIME (1928) Starring Colleen Moore with Gary Cooperin 35 Millimeter! A very rare 35 Millimeter screening on March 7th at 7.30 PM. Generally, when ever this is shown it is from a 16 millimeter source. Although 80 minutes seems a bit short for 11 reels. So I wonder if...

Re: Beggars Of Life

BEGGARS OF LIFE was screened in New York at the Film Forum last Monday night. This was the recent 35 Millimeter restoration from Eastman House done in 2006. Bill Wellman Junior was even there to present the movie. Let's hope that Paramount makes the film available, if not on DVD or Blu-ray at least...

Re: The Artist (2011) a contemporary silent

Red River, :o The fully restored THE BIG PARADE has never been on TCM. Or on Television anywhere for that matter. They are still airing the Thames Silents version produced in 1983. Broadcast Standards are much different now. THE BIG PARADE is one of the greatest films ever made. 10 times better than...

Re: The Artist (2011) a contemporary silent

:o I was thrilled THE ARTIST won all these awards last night that was tremendous. But I would be allot more thrilled if it inspired Warner's, Paramount and the other major studio's to release their big Silents on DVD and Blu-ray. Especially, THE BIG PARADE and BEAU GESTE. There is really no compelli...
