I saw this movie on first release and was most disappointed. Maybe because I was so pissed that Altman had strayed so far from Chandler’s novel, preventing me from seeing any inherent qualities in the movie itself. Perhaps I should watch it again bearing in mind that this is not the Chandler novel. ...

Sad to hear of the passing of John Martyn yesterday. Not well known in the US (except by me and a few others), but a legend elsewhere. His wonderfull 1973 'Solid Air' album is one of my Desert Island Disks. John Martyn and Danny Thompson - Solid Air [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohmSPv-rtS...

I, Claudius
Rumors abound on the internet that Robert Graves’ epic novels about the dysfunctional Julio-Claudians will finally reach the big screen. Rumor also has it that Leonardo DiCaprio will star as the Emperor Claudius. I like the idea of DiCaprio in this role. Of the current crop of actors I think he is t...

Dear Mr. Arkadin, melwalton and Garbomaniac, thanks for your insight. You’ve all given me much to think about. Arguments can be made for and against both points of view. But it was a product of its time, and for its time it was certainly a step in the right direction. I see the video of the lovely L...

Significant events in cinema history - The first lady. http://metry.road.googlepages.com/munson456.jpg Audrey Munson . The first (?) actress to appear fully nude in a mainstream movie (I specify mainstream as opposed to pornographic, stag, and nickelodeon peepshow movies). ‘ Inspiration ’ (1915). Th...

Women of substance. – Actresses of Beauty and Depth
My daughter and I were having a discussion (as we often do) on the subject of personal beauty. Over the years she has become wary but tolerant of my Cut-rate philosophizing, and has become skilled and adept at keeping my musings within the bounds of rationality with responses such as “Oh Dad, you’re...

Hope all you DJ’s had a good Christmas and that you will have a good new year. I had a great Christmas. Even though my kids are now in their twenties and teens we still gather under the tree on Christmas morning to open presents and just be together (priceless). Joni Mitchell’s song reminded me that...

I heard or read somewhere that 'The Prisoner' was going to be revived in a new series. Any news? After some intensive digging around at YouTube I finally found the show I was looking for. It was a Hammer television production called 'Journey To The Unknown', ran for about a dozen episodes. When I wa...

Dear Stuart, hope you had a happy Christmas. Thanks for the clips, they bring back lots of fond memories. 'The Good Life' (titled 'Good Neighbors' in the US), probably my favorite British sit-com of all time. The episode where Tom, Barbara, Margot and Jerry get drunk is classic, Penelope Keith was h...

Well, that bugger Ken123 has left us hanging here. Until he shows up to post his clue, I'll go ahead and post one. Here's an 'In Other Words' type question. What's the movie? Scapegoated naval officer joins forces with a schoolteacher, a best selling author, and a legendary outlaw to thwart a real l...

In the Mood for Love
I really didn't know where to post this. I think the 'Classic Cinema College' is probably the most appropriate place. I have just watched one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. I mean of course 'In The Mood For Love' by the Chinese film director Kar Wai Wong . Everything about this movie ...
