Re: Alan Ladd
Don't get me wrong - when I say that Ladd projects 'a wooden blandness' on screen, this is not a knock. I find him rather one dimensional, but it works really well for him - especially in his many noir and detective films he made. I've always enjoyed HELL ON FRISCO BAY (55) where Ladd's ex-cop seeks...

Re: jean arthur - any other fans?
It's a terrific Howard Hawks film - part of a run of exceptional movies he made starting with BRINGING UP BABY up through RED RIVER.
He and Grant made a great creative team.

Re: Alan Ladd
Turner could definitely play 'flirtatious' but she was much too modern looking in order to play a 20's flapper. Allyson did have that look and made many films set in that era ( GOOD NEWS, GLENN MILLER STORY ) and she would had been fine if she could drop her 'sweetness level' for the role. I believe...

All it means is that THE LOST PATROL is in the heavy rotation list on TCM this year.
It feels like it has aired once a month since January.

You English are so lucky. Why can't we get media scandals here across the pond?
We could use a little house cleaning in the information distribution department.

I was going to add the Seinfield caveat concerning 'filmed plays'.
"Not that it's a bad thing...."
I never heard of HEAT LIGHTNING but I hope their cacti set is more convincing than in PF

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
It's a rather straightforward political thriller. Lancaster is a powerful, respected U.S. General who feels that the sitting President is weak on defense so he secretly plots a military coup. His trusted aide (Douglas) is kept in the dark about these events but slowly uncovers disturbing evidence an...

THE PETRIFIED FOREST is set in a lonely Arizona desert cafe where all the characters converge, talk and get gunned down.
It's practically the definition of a filmed play.

I never heard of that. You may be thinking of the Field's segment from TALES OF MANHATTAN (1942) which was cut from the original release and eventually restored on video.

Re: News Of The World goes under
Rupert Murdoch is very well known here in the states thanks to a nasty, sorid, propagandized little reality show he has on the airstuart.uk wrote: I wasn’t sure Murdoch was known in the U.S.
called FOX NEWS.
Or as his friend Keith Olbermann calls it, FOX NOISE.
(That always cracks me up)

Re: FRANK BORZAGE
I always felt that Pickford remade SECRETS because she admired Talmadge's scene of the besieged cabin and the death of their baby.
Howard Hawks always said that a good movie can be made from 3 or 4 good scenes.
Or in this case, one great scene.

Re: Hemingway on Film
I could comment on these films as 'films' but not in relation to Hemingway since I am not a student of his writing (That would had been my dad). From what I have read through the years, however, it seems that FOR WHOM BELLS TOLL, SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO and SUN ALSO RISES best represent Hemingway's phi...
