Re: George Raft

Out of all the major Hollywood studios at the time, I think it's safe to say that Warners was the most acrimonious. If actors weren't fighting over salaries (Cagney), they were battling over roles (Davis). After the success of "Yankee Doodle Dandy", Jimmy Cagney left Warners with brother B...

Re: George Raft

Tony Curtis was . . . an interesting guy. In his later years he seemed to shift his opinion about working with Marilyn, speaking in more favorable terms. My buddy Mickey Knox who appeared with Tony in "City Across the River" wasn't very fond of Curtis and never even gives him a mention in ...

Re: George Raft

Thanks Ali, I'm sure you know my real name already from my book. And Nancy, the same with you as my reference. Still new enough on this board to not know our true names, but nice and particularly welcome that we can refer to each other by those. Back to Some Like It Hot , from what Francesca Robinso...

Re: George Raft

Again, many thanks for your clever photo postings, knitwit. My laugh of the day. Two of the toughest mugs in Hollywood at the time. But Mike really was an educated softy. Met him when he appeared in Winnipeg as the guest speaker at the Ukrainian Professional Businessman's dinner (which the following...

Re: George Raft

That's the pic, and doesn't Eddie look p****d. Definitely one photo I'd like to have had in my book. That fight always upset Eddie because he said in all his years in movies it was the only time he ever had a physical confrontation with anyone and that he was looking forward to working with George o...

Re: George Raft

I don't know if George really ever appreciated - or even understood his success. He was an entertainer on Broadway but a film career was not something I think he ever truly aspired to. He remained for many years the undereducated tough street kid, and carried many of those values with him throughout...

Re: George Raft

You know CCF, I have seen a famous photo of the Raft-Robinson brawl which also shows big, burly Alan Hale attempting to restrain a clearly very angry Eddie. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a print for the book. The best known story of why they had the fight was that Raft felt Eddie was always put...

Re: George Raft

Yes, I actually had my story about my encounter with Al Pacino published some years back in The National enquirer, when they were running a weekly feature on people meeting celebrities. I always hoped that Al had read it, as I was (and am) very grateful for his kindness and generosity. He's a truly ...

Re: George Raft

You're more than welcome, Moira. Happy to provide. Yes, I consider it such an honor to have known Lloyd and Jack. Terrific guys both - and I'd also include Marc Lawrence and Mike Mazurki in that group. Menacing (if not downright scary) onscreen but pussycats - and intelligent - in real life. Of cour...

Re: *CANDIDS*

Yes, and he really was. A friend of mine who had a bit part with Mason in "Botany Bay" says that James was a true cat lover. My buddy warmed up to Mason when James was trying to find homes for his "kitties", and my friend, though not a cat lover, agreed to take one of the fur bal...

Re: George Raft

Gosh, I'm such a computer Neanderthal. But I'm going to check with one of our gals here at my office tomorrow to see if I can share with you all my personalized Pacino picture. I'm very proud of it. The only thing about Holden in Invisible Stripes is that he often displays his inexperience by consta...

Re: George Raft

When I was in L.A. at a talent conference, the event was held at the Beverly Hills Hilton. When I was hanging around the lobby the elevator opened and out stepped the great Al Pacino and some, I assume friends of his. Realizing that I would NEVER have another chance (and being an enormous Pacino fan...

Re: George Raft

Moira, I apologize for not responding to the rest of your post. Got on a writing fury and missed your questions. I must confess I don't know which of his film roles Jack La Rue enjoyed the most. We really never discussed that. But I can tell you that Lloyd Nolan's favorite films were "A Treee G...

Re: George Raft

Thank You, feaito. As I stated in the intro to my bio, I feel that George has been virtually forgotten by today's audience and, IMO, that's not only unfortunate but unfair. He was one of the shining stars of Classic Hollywood and his contribution to the Golden Age of Movies should not be ignored.

Re: George Raft

Hi Moira: Yes, I was very fortunate to meet both Lloyd Nolan (my 1974 interview with him is in Filmfax; I'm writing this from work so don't have the issue number handy but could post it tomorrow if you're interested). It's also mentioned in Sandy Grabman's Nolan biography. I corresponded with Lloyd ...
