Re: George Raft

Well, with the site down over the weekend I was unable to read these wonderful comments. CCF, thank you again, sincerely, for your kind words regarding my Raft bio. You know, recently there has been some controversy regarding George's birth year (check out Raft's IMDb page). It is being said that he...

Re: George Raft

Wow ccf, you really just made my day with your complimentary comments regarding my Raft book. I can't thank you enough. Actually, I've been researching George's life since 1972 (after I became knocked out by him as Stacey in "Each Dawn I Die"). I picked up as much personal and professional...

Re: George Raft

Well, CineMaven -- kinda yes, you'd like to think. But in my experience (and it can't get more depressing than this), when I mention classic Hollywood names to many of my younger friends - and not THAT much younger than myself, they don't know who I'm talking about. Bogart, Cagney, Flynn, Gable, Tra...

Re: George Raft

Well, Georgie Raft may not be anyone's candidate for World's Greatest Actor, but, dammit, he had class, presence and personality, and when he was in his element, working with top directors and strong co-players, he did deliver the goods. So-called "talents" like Ashton Kutcher aren't of a ...

Re: George Raft

Ashton . . . who , I believe, sums it up just about perfectly.

Re: George Raft

Some years back I was in contact with Marc Lawrence about working with him on a book. He'd self-published an autobiography "Long Time, No See", but overall the book dealt less with his film career than his blacklisting and subsequent self-imposed European exile. What I proposed was a book ...

Re: George Raft

I'll be very eager to hear your comments, charliechaplinfan. Please give me your review when you've had the chance to read the book. I know Citadel Books did a volume called "The Films of Fredric March" some years back, which offered a pretty detailed biography in addition to March's film ...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Films . . . in later decades . . .

What are those?

IMO, nothing beats the classics. Actually can't even remember the last "latest release" I've seen.

Re: George Raft

Again, charliechaplinfan, many thanks for your kind words. I know there were two previous bios done on Raft, one of which George himself disapproved and, of course, the Yablonsky book, in which George participated. Of course certain bits of info were culled from these books and cross-referenced, esp...

Re: George Raft

Hey charliechaplinfan, maybe I should hire you as my publicist. Appreciate you spreading the word. Well, in the Introduction to the book I describe how I first became fascinated with Raft. In a nutshell, I spent the summer of 1973 in Chicago (which actually played vintage movies as opposed to Winnip...

Re: George Raft

Thanks charliechaplin fan. while the book was not a tremendous seller (which I frankly expected) I have been very pleased with kind words received by Lew Yablonsky (who generously told me my bio had stuff in it that even he didn't know - and Lew was friendly with Raft during the actor's later years)...

Re: George Raft

Sure, feaito. The book is called "George Raft: The Man Who Would Be Bogart", one of a series of celeb bios I've written. I must confess I'm not a great fan of NIGHT AFTER NIGHT - or most of Raft's Paramount films, for that matter. I do recommend DANCERS IN THE DARK (for Raft's post-SCARFAC...

Re: George Raft

Hi feaito. Thanks for weighing in. Have enjoyed your postings since before I joined the forum. Interesting that you bring up NIGHT AFTER NIGHT. As you may be aware, this was the first film that George received top-billing in, though his Paramount contract fee was less than that earned by Alison Skip...

Re: George Raft

Well, in fairness, George did come across as a virtual footnote in the "Biography" episodes on Bugsy Siegel and Bogart.
