Re: WILLIAM WELLMAN

Glad to see some Wellman discussion. During my obsession with pre-codes over the past couple years, Wellman's films have been a shining light, consistently energetic and engaging. I admire Wellman for being able to work in every genre with skill, and also for being so prolific. It's incredible that ...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I'm very glad that the forum is up and running again. feaito, I am big fan of Wellman, and Heroes For Sale . I'm amazed at how dense the film is, with themes of war, poverty, communism, labor, technology, heroism and cowardice all being crammed into 70 minutes. Remarkably it never feels rushed eithe...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Well, I've watched several things in the past little while: Lonesome - I watched this without knowing anything about it, and was pretty much floored by it. The opening 10 minutes are absolutely sublime. I loved the documentary quality of the two leads (Barbara Kent and Glenn Tryon) going through the...

Re: Choo-choo-choose Your Own Essentials!

Well reading this thread gave me something to think about at work today. Glad to see such diversity, and am glad to see The World's Greatest Sinner on somebody's list. I watched it over Christmas with my brother, and we were both very impressed. Gosh Timothy Carey is one of those rare birds who can ...

Re: Harold Lloyd

Girl Shy is pretty grand stuff, highlighted by Lloyd's absurd love fantasies, and the glorious chase sequence that takes up the last part of the film. I found the chase to be absolutely dizzying as Lloyd continually switches modes of transportation ranging from train to bicycle to motorbike to hors...

Harold Lloyd

So I've discovered the films of Harold Lloyd, by means of the Harold Lloyd Collection I purchased from amazon.co.uk. I got the UK version because it was cheaper, and has an extra film (Welcome Danger), and I am happy to say it might be the best thing I've ever purchased. My gosh, how I love this man...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

feaito, at some point I plan to pick up the Universal Pre-code set. Hot Saturday sounds very interesting, I really want to check out Merrily We Go To Hell...for my money Fred March is the preeminent screen drunk. There's no one I'd rather see tie one on. :D As for me well aside from copious amounts ...

Re: Cinema Europe (1996) via Youtube

Yup it's a wonderful documentary, the sections on Nordic cinema are particularly fascinating, given that the silent films of Sweden and Denmark have been sadly neglected for the most part. I'm looking forward to diving into some Benjamin Christenson.

Re: Victor Sjöström Films

I re-watched The Phantom Carriage on the weekend, oddly enough on Sunday night, though I watched it on DVD rather than TCM. I have the KTL edition released in the UK by Tartan, and am very pleased with it. KTL refers to the band that composed the score, and as much as I've developed a distaste for m...

Re: Lubitsch Alert

Yup, I don't understand the animosity towards Bluebeard's Eighth Wife, I think it's among his funniest films. It seems it only gets mentioned for the "meet-cute" but it's got a ton of great bits, from David Niven getting punched out, Coop's attempts to become wordly, Claudette getting span...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Keep in mind that Vidor had quite a bit of goodwill due to the massive success of The Big Parade . Also there was an alternate happy ending to The Crowd , though according to Vidor no distributors ever bothered to show it instead opting for the ending we see now. That being said every studio did hav...

Re: July Schedule is Up

I'm super excited about the Mae Clarke films. I have that awful bootleg of Three Wise Girls , and it's unwatchable, you can't even tell who is who in it. So I'm excited to actually watch it. Also I had no idea that The Good Bad Girl still existed, it has no votes on imdb, so count me doubly excited....

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Lulu is definitely beautiful. I'm eager to see The Dragon Painter...ooh and just looking up the Milestone DVD it also has Hayakawa's The Wrath of the Gods as an extra. Might have to pick that one up. As for me well as usual I've watched more silents: Assunta Spina - An early (1913) Italian melodrama...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Not sure why but neither Ben-Hur does much for me. I find the chariot sequences in each to be endlessly fascinating, but I find the rest of each film to be pretty underwhelming. Here's what I've watched in the last little bit: The Cheat (1915) - This film really blew me out of the water. Sessue Haya...
