Re: LURED
I like Chio's comments from 2009. As often as not, I like a Sirk melodrama. TARNISHED ANGELS is quite good. From a Faulkner story, the literate quality is evident. IMITATION OF LIFE, bright colors and all, is thoughtful and moving. Likewise, ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS. These are good, old fashioned soap...

Re: Hello from San Francisco
I've only visited your lovely city once. But when I see it in a movie, I recognize it instantly! No other city is so unique in its character and appearance. Occasionally, I'm wrong. It turns out to be some other town that has streetcars rolling up and down steep hills! But more often than not, a min...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
Holy ****ing Wow! I envy the poster who watched THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL for the first time. As it happens, MikeBSG didn't care for it as much as I do. But this makes me recall my own first viewing of this fine movie. This is one of those sheer delights I watch again and again. Maybe a little bit o...

My youthful pleasure was Ross Macdonald. I devoured his books like popcorn!

Re: Very Important Zombie Information
Standard and Poor has just downgraded US zombies to a rating of AA plus. Is that good or bad?

Re: The Best Marlowe
I like Bogart in the role, but I'll take MURDER, MY SWEET for the film. The slick, cynical naration adds so much to the effect. What is Raymond Chandler without it, for Heaven's sake? The story is fascinating; my favorite of the books. And Powell is just fine. He's not Bogart. But he plays the chara...

Re: Double Indemnity - 1944 Film Noir Classic
I can't believe I'm being drawn into the "Is It Noir or is It Memorex" debate, but MALTESE FALCON is pretty darned close. It's dark in mood, though the flip dialogue does provide some light moments. The breakneck pace serves the movie beautifully. Does it detract from the contemplative ang...

Re: The Prowler - Joseph Losey
I like the second half of this odd little noir. The story becomes desperate, tense. It's quite suspenseful. I wasn't terribly intrigued with the "getting to know you" sequence. They flirt, she backs off, he comes back. I knew where it was going and I wished to Hell they'd get there. Once t...

This is one cold dame! As much as I like Mitchum, it's Jane's icy presence that makes their films together.

Re: THE UNINVITED
I absolutely agree. I nitpick a little, just to stimulate discussion. (In a minute, I'm going to do it on another thread!) This may well be the best sophisticated horror film ever made. My hero, Val Lewton not withstanding! By the way, have I spelled NITPICK correctly? It's not like GNAT, is it? Do ...

Re: Miss Marple Mysteries
I keep meaning to read some of the Marple books. Never get around to it. I've read Poirot. Some of the non-serial stuff. No Marple. I liked the movie, THE MIRROR CRACKED. Pretty typical. But done well.

Re: What are you reading?
Lippman is great at dropping the names of real people and places. In one book, she mentions the name of a professor I've actually met. It almost freaked me out! I liked I'D KNOW YOU ANYWHERE. It's fairly new. Sometimes that adds to the excitement. EVERY SECRET THING is good. They're all good. But af...

I read Tim Burton was somehow involved with the Lincoln film. I don't see anything in the IMDB link. But I'm I sure I read that!

I wish I remembered this interesting movie a little better. My limited recall prevents extensive comment, but I'd love to hear the opinions of others. I like this thread, and others like it. Some movies are PRETTY GOOD. Worth watching. They can't all be THE SEARCHERS. I love that my high school frie...

Re: What are you reading?
I'm another who enjoys light fiction. I don't want to work too hard. I'm reading a new mystery called THINK OF A NUMBER. About a retired cop drawn into a puzzling situation. I don't just love it. But it was recommended by a friend. It will be fun to talk about it with him. Recently, I've been readin...
