Re: Napoléon (1927) at the Royal Festival Hall, 30 November 2013

Thanks everybody. :) Actually, I should have written also an account of the 1913 Show I attended on December 2nd at the BFI. Every year the BFI silent film curator Bryony Dixon shows a selections of films made 100 years ago. I saw the 1912 show last year which was very interesting with in particular...

But I got busy with various other tasks. Now I have time to tell...

There is a DVD with Spanish (Castillian) subs: here. Looks like bootleg, but no trace of a DVD with English subs.

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

And here I am again! :) Yesterday I watched Le Silence est d'or (1947), a René Clair shot in France immediately after his return from Hollywood. The film is nostalgic look at the early days of movie making around 1900. Maurice Chevalier plays a film director in a primitive studio who falls in love w...

Thanks Kingrat. I'll try to post more on SSO. I have been rather down the weather recently and didn't post much.

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

Dear Kingrat, count me in as René Clément admirer. The Knave of Hearts is definitely a winner, a lovely film with a great performance by Gérard Philipe shot on locations in London with a hidden camera. The film had been invisible for a long time due to rights problems. But a 2 years ago, it was broa...

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

I knew you would love it, Alison! :) It's a really a fun picture and it used to be shown regularly on TV when I was young. What really caught me at the time is that the film was shot partly on a small island (Ile d'Aix) off the coast of La Rochelle, a place I knew very well. The three characters are...

First Biography of Albert Capellani

I am going to blow my own horn, I hope you don't mind. My first book as an author is coming out now. It's the first ever biography of French film pioneer Albert Capellani who worked for Pathé and later in the USA in Fort Lee and Hollywood. http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa123/cleteux/Couverture-...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I really agree with that, all the silent Capras I watched were well below the quality of his early talkies. Like you say, he needed dialogue to get on!

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

Recently I saw Les Amants de Vérone (The Lovers of Verona, 1948) with Anouk Aimée, Serge Reggiani and Pierre Brasseur. This André Cayatte feature proved really worthy of a discovery. Unlike some of his other films which are often overlong and ponderous, this updated version of the Romeo & Juliet...
