Re: January 2024 Schedule Posted, Robert Mitchum is SOTM

My oh my. The perfect double feature would be RUNNING BRAVE, where we have the fight in the shower scene with Robby naked from behind and the other guy frontally naked. Robby has to wear a lot more clothes in THE CHOSEN. Hate to break it to you, but if Running Brave was to air, you would find that ...

Re: I Just Watched...

I will randomly toss out that 1995 - while not a good year for GREAT MOVIES, was, however, a GREAT YEAR for GOOD MOVIES (and a rare year where I think the Oscars were closer to being on the mark than usual [at least nominations-wise].) some notable films from that year just off the top o' my head: ...

Re: January 2024 Schedule Posted, Robert Mitchum is SOTM

Delighted that TCM is showing so many Mitchum movies this month. It seems churlish to wish that they had found room for THE NIGHT FIGHTERS, a fine film set in Ireland, and, to show Mitchum as part of an ensemble in the latter part of his career, THAT CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON. I'm not especially fond of t...

About the updated Dickens, as described by Swithin and the review he cites, with the kindergarten Freud, the heavy-handed Marxism, the attempts to be DARING and EDGY: A friend taught me this quotation from Goethe, which certainly applies here: Man merkt die Absicht und man ist verstimmt . "One ...

Re: I Just Watched...

Last night I saw some of HOUSEBOAT--news flash! Sophia Loren is gorgeous--and most of FATHER GOOSE. Not only is Leslie Caron gorgeous but her performance is superb. Shot by shot, her reactions and expressions are masterful.

Cary Grant and some children were in those films, too.

Re: Just Plain Bad Movies

How could any movie with Sophia Loren, Paul Newman, and David Niven be bad? Well, it could be directed by Peter Ustinov, a gifted actor and writer but not a good director. The artificial comedy of LADY L might have worked if Ernst Lubitsch had directed it, but it's lifeless. A similarly lifeless art...

Re: I Just Watched...

It seemed to be a given in the 1950s that teachers were poorly paid and might need a second job. We recently saw "The Case of the Married Moonlighter" on PERRY MASON where that was the case, and I was reminded of BIGGER THAN LIFE and THIS COULD BE THE NIGHT, which also have moonlighting te...

Re: What are you listening to?

Today during Christmas with my husband's family we listened to new vinyl pressings of old Christmas albums, brought by a young woman: A Charlie Brown Christmas (Vince Guaraldi Trio) Nat King Cole Ella Fitzgerald, Ella's Swinging Christmas Harry Simeone Chorale, Little Drummer Boy The Frank Sinatra F...

Re: I Just Watched...

To follow up on one of CinemaInternational's comments, a poster called filmlover who used to be active both on this board and on the TCM board pointed out that seeing a mainstream comedy on TV or DVD at home is very different from seeing it with a large audience in the theater, as intended. That's h...

Re: Warner Bros., Paramount in merger talks

Beginning with the Reagan Administration in 1980, not enough people have cared about the violation of antitrust laws. Both Republican and Democratic administrations have acquiesced in finding excuses for allowing anti-competitive behavior. This has reshaped American society. Most people would be sho...

Re: Uncoupled (2022)

Ah, England, where people have names like Imogen Poots. Shows you the wisdom of old Hollywood where she would have become something like Amy Parker. The final episode of UNCOUPLED seemed to realize, correctly in my view, that Michael's "friends" Stanley and Billy need to become more sympat...
