Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I'm very glad you liked Smiles of the Summer Night. It's a bit different, but from what I understand Bergman developed a great deal as a film maker over the long period of time when he made movies. In the 1960's, for instance, he would deal with his themes in a darker way. The 50's was a lighter per...

Re: The Good News Thread

Brenda, I was so happy to read about the babies. This is such great news. I remember your discussion of the names here on this board as well, Emma and Annabelle. They are lovely, old-fashioned names. :)

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I watched the 1920 version of Hamlet recently! It's a great film, I can definitively recommend it if any of you have a chance to see it - although unfortunately, it's not available on DVD, so it's rare to get to view it. Even though it is silent, it is an intriguing retelling of the story, with some...

Thanks for the link Annharding, this sounds great! I'm going to enjoy seeing Max Linder's take on The Three Musketeers. Was he parodying Doug's version or the French version? I'm glad to see that that site is running again. Last time I checked it they had closed it down. I hope it will continue to g...

Anne, I'm sorry if I have sounded harsh to you in the past, I didn't know you were going through these things. How awful. You are in my thoughts! Melwalton and Birdie and Bryce too. Knitwit45 - I suffer with you. When will someone invent a proper cure for cold? It goes on forever - if you live in a ...

I love that film. It is haunting to watch Carola Neher when you know what happened to her. I think her husband was also murdered. You can't really find much information about her on the web that isn't in German.

:D Brenda and Alison, thank you for your kindness! We thought she had a job in the bag last summer, but she didn't have a contract then, and things were changing fast. Now more people have lost their jobs, so the competition is tough. We are optimistic now though. Anne, a few things have changed. I ...

That one does sound like a winner, Drednm! From the little I have seen she seemed to be an actress who benefited from the style of the precodes. But of course, that's a meaningless thing to say since we've got nothing later to judge her by...

I saw Pat and Mike , thanks to Alison. It was very enjoyable. I was surprised. By now I've grown slightly used to the Hollywood movies where independent ambitious women are put in their place. By contrast Pat and Mike was refreshing. With Catherine Hepburn I might have known. I've always liked her, ...

Christine, Lilyan Tashman certainly was a fascinating actress. In Bulldog Drummond she manages to be both wonderfully evil and a little bit sympathetic. She was a very interesting villainess, much more dynamic than the good girl. I saw the charming, eerily nostalgic The Insects' Christmas , about a ...

Hollis, I am happy for you and hope you'll enjoy yourself. And Klondike, congratulations on your grandchild. :) I'm sorry that I'm late in congratulating you, but I've been busy both on the days and the evenings studying, so I have really only had time to check my mail. I try, but these days I'm hav...

Synnove, thanks for that nice review of this Stiller movie! :) I recently saw Johan , another great Stiller silent. I was absolutely enchanted by the film's beauty and intelligence. It's amazing how ahead of their time the Swedes were in the 10s in terms of cinema. Where did you get to see ...

That does sound like a great film for Barrymore. I always liked him better in his more sophisticated early 30's roles than in his romantic melodramas of the 20's. Today I finally watched The Thief of Bagdad with my brother. It's an enchanting fairytale movie with, for its period, great special effec...
