Guest Programmer

Post by srowley75 »

Sorry if this question has already been posted (I did a search that turned up nothing...)

But who would you like to see as a TCM Guest Programmer? My choice: John Waters. He's probably the most entertaining host that hasn't been featured as yet (at least not to my knowledge...) You could expect to see Boom! and Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! on the schedule.

Second place would probably go to Quentin Tarantino. I realize he's slated for this Elvis Mitchell thing, but I have to wonder how much of an opportunity he'll really get to talk about the films.

Just off the top of my head, I'd say...
1.) James Whitmore, if he's up for it, would be my first choice. I'd hope that he might comment on his own movies as well as expand on the directors he's worked with over time. Having relished his comments in the TCM interstitial regarding The Asphalt Jungle and coming across a few interviews he gave in the last few decades, I suspect that he's a delight and his work deserves more recognition.

2.) Olivia De Havilland: it would be nice to catch up on her thoughts and picks among her movies, but I'm not sure if this will ever come to pass, despite the fact that Robert Osborne seems to have escorted her on a few occasions. I don't mind that she seems a bit self consciously fey in some recent appearances, (i.e. The Errol Flynn documentary on TCM a few years ago). She's old, and she's earned the right to be as winsome as she'd like to be.

3.) Marsha Hunt: I always liked her movies, and loved her book, The Way We Wore, which looked at clothes and style in the movies, but much more. Whenever I've read her interviews, she comes across as a wryly funny and very intelligent and a bit rueful without being bitter. Currently I'm reading her thoughts in Tender Comrades, a collection of interviews conducted by Patrick McGilligan with people affected by the HUAC witch hunts. She seems to be an exceptional person, and her comments about her experiences with SAG are very interesting in light of the recent 75th anniversary of Actor's Guild.

I caught "Marty" this morning on Encore so why not have Ernest Borgnine. How un-Paddy Chayefsky this seems.

My wife laughed at his mother and aunt because she said that's the way Italian women are.

Neat one, Chris! I think TCM should devote a SOTM to Ernest Borgnine now. He's certainly appeared in enough movies, many of them very good ones.

While watching Borgnine this morning I am comparing this character to the brute he played in "Bad Day At Black Rock" and just marveling at how different they were.

At least a "Private Screenings" is in order if he is willing.

Ernie, definitely! It's amazing that TCM hasn't already got around to featuring him either as a guest programmer or in a "Private Screening" interview. The guy's a marvel - still active at 91! Would also be a nice tie-in with his upcoming autobiography.

Yes...get him to host Call Me Madam.

I'd like to hear his comments on Willard - I've never seen the movie, but if he did his own stunts, he's more of a man than I could ever be.

I'd like to see TCM host a Star of the Month tribute for Olivia with her comments on each of the films. Among other things, we'd finally (presumably) get to see To Each His Own and The Dark Mirror on TV again. And another airing of Hold Back the Dawn wouldn't be too bad.
