The plot centers on Lucio Santana, a lovable prankster and class clown whose dad happens to be a detective working on the serial killings of local children.

"....Carlos Hugo Christensen had a particular liking for the film noir aesthetic and stories of shadowy deeds .... The Luzhin Defence (2000)
1h 46m | Adaptation

centers on a mentally tormented chess grandmaster and the young woman he meets while competing at a world-class tournament in Italy. The screenplay was based on the novel The Defense (or The Luzhin Defence) by Vladimir Nabokov.

Director
Marleen Gorris
Cast
John Turturro, Emily Watson, Geraldine James

"....Director Marleen Gorris of "Antonia's Line" (1996 Academy Award's Best Foreign Language Film from the Netherlands) gave us a quietly sensitive film - not without its unsettling human conflicts, intrigues, obsessions, family strives, lovingness and respect. The front-end subject is the mind-game and mathematical logic of chess. Beneath it can be a mild tearjerker of a drama set in the late 1920's. Cinematography captures the serene beauty of Lake Como in northern Italy near the Swiss border...."

It appears that TCM has cancelled the premiere of the D.W. Griffith silent film The Sheriff's Baby (1913) originally scheduled for Silent Sunday Nights late in the evening on June 16. The TCM premieres of two other William S. Hart westerns are still scheduled to be shown that evening - Wolf Lowry (1917) and The Bad Buck of Santa Ynez (1915).

You can refer to my TCM schedule information page for additional details:

"Billy Elliot received positive critical response and commercial success, earning $109.3 million worldwide on a $5 million budget. At the 54th British Academy Film Awards, the film won three of thirteen award nominations. Jamie Bell became the youngest winner of Best Actor in a Leading Role. The film also earned three Academy Award nominations, including for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress in a Supporting Role. ...

...... Roger Ebert gave the film three out of four stars, calling the film "as much parable and fantasy as it is realistic". He said Bell's performance was "engaging", Lewis was "convincing" and Walters was "spirited and colourful".[25]
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian praised the film saying, "This is a film with a lot of charm, a lot of humour and a lot of heart. Daldry's direction and the screenplay by Lee Hall distinguish themselves further in the discreet, intelligent way ... Billy Elliot has a freshness that makes it a pleasure to watch; it's a very emphatic success"....

To be fair to Paltrow, she isn't selling New Age kitsch in Shakespeare in Love. I'd nominate her before Montenegro.

One of William S. Hart’s earliest surviving films, this western two-reeler tells the tale of a bad guy who narrowly escapes being guest of honor at a necktie party and learns to be not quite so bad when he meets a kid in trouble.

Director
William S. Hart

".... While some of his later work could be wonderful, he tended to get trapped in either fulfilling his chosen formula or attempting to subvert it. Plus, the earlier films often avoid the overbearing religiosity that give his later offerings the flavor of a sermon, albeit one delivered by a very violent preacher.

The direction, as was typical for Hart, is simple and to the point with emphasis on the wild beauty of the west. ...."

TCM went ahead and showed the premiere of the silent short The Sheriff's Baby (1913) as part of Silent Sunday Nights. If you have WatchTCM, you can see all 3 films - Wolf Lowery (1917), The Bad Buck of Santa Ynez (1915), and The Sheriff's Baby (1913) together under the Wolf Lowery title, with a total runtime of 1 hour and 56 minutes. Jacqueline Stewart also has material at the beginning, middle, and end of the video.

I like this movie a lot.
I especially love how the father and brother ultimately support Billy's dreams.

It was later adapted into a stage musical with songs by Elton John (music) and Lee Hall (lyrics).

One of my favorite songs is "Merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher."

Here's recording of the song that Elton John himself made:

Those were semi-interesting from a historical perspective but all were extremely dull. No wonder Hart isn’t remembered too fondly compared to the 30s western stars like Wayne.

The day Thatcher died, the London company of Billy Elliot actually took a vote of the audience before the show to determine if the song should be included in that night's performance. Only 3 voted against keeping the song and the show went on as usual.

The William Hart films were pretty basic, but apparently very popular for the times. Jacqueline Stewart mentioned that Hart wanted to portray the West in a more authentic manner - I wonder what westerns were like before these examples (we don't see many westerns from the 1910's to compare with). It would also be interesting to see some of Hart's films from the 1920's to see if there was some progression there.
